Who could have imagined a few years ago that Juliette Lewis, one of the most talented and versatile actors of her generation, had so much vocal power? “Lewis has a voice and she uses it. Spontaneous and urgent, there’s a bit of wickedness to her lyrics,” according to the Metroactive website. Yes, Juliette Lewis has a band — Juliette & the Licks — and thanks to its energy and the music's lyrics, it is just the kind of new band the public is looking for. “I had always wanted to be a singer since I was seven. I always had this drive to be musical and express myself like that on stage.”

Juliette and her band have been together for more than a year. Their debut album, Like a Bolt of Lightning , is due in September on Fiddler Records. “What I want to do with this first album is just capture the live show,” says Lewis. “All it’s about for me is just capturing the live energy.” Inspired by Blondie, Iggy Pop, Pat Benatar, and Joan Jett, this 31-year-old-singer/songwriter refuses to enter the commercial mainstream and wants to create her own musical identity. Her punk-rock music and live performances amaze and enthrall audiences. “I want them to feel [the] emotion that I’m putting out,” she notes. Juliette’s band, The Licks, is composed of veteran musicians: ex-Hole drummer Patty Schemel, Paul III on bass, Todd Morse from H20 on rhythm guitar, and Kemble Walters on lead guitar.

Lewis is still taking on small roles, but at the moment she wants to focus on her music. “This is what I’m absolutely hungry for right now and I want to see it through,” she says.

Her amazing performances at the national punk Vans Warped ’04 tour were obviously only a beginning.
