The figure represents an increase of 7 percent over the previous year, it was announced by Del Bryant, President & CEO of BMI. The revenues resulted in royalties for distribution to BMI-affiliated songwriters, composers and publishers of $676 million, an increase of 8.2 percent over last year. These results represent the largest performing right income of any copyright organization in the industry.

"I am particularly pleased that our tradition of technology leadership and consistent attention to cost control have permitted us to deliver an ever-larger proportion of our licensing income to the songwriters, composers and copyright owners we represent," Bryant said in making the announcement. Operational expenses as a percentage of revenues decreased from 14.2 percent to 13.2 percent, the lowest in BMI's history and among the lowest of the world's major copyright organizations.

Although total license fees from traditional analog media continued to increase, revenues from cable, satellite, the Internet and other digital media surged ahead. Cable and satellite revenue grew by $24 million and now represents more than 17 percent of the company's total. New media revenues grew to more than $16 million, an increase of 35 percent over the prior year. International revenues also hit a new high at $204 million, and general licensing income, from tens of thousands of bars and restaurants, retail, and service establishments, increased 12 percent over the prior year to more than $86 million.

BMI's revenues are attributable to the diversity, scope and popularity of the music created by the more than 300,000 songwriters, composers and music publishers that the company represents. These songwriters transcend global boundaries and have broad international appeal, and include such acts as Mariah Carey, the Black Eyed Peas, Rihanna, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Shakira, Toby Keith, R. Kelly, Linkin Park, Juanes, Keith Urban, Gnarls Barkley, Korn, Don Omar and Pink, as well as top urban songwriters/producers including Lil Jon, the Neptunes, Snoop Dogg, Sean Garrett, multi-Grammy Award winner Kanye West, T.I., Jamie Foxx, and newcomers Ne-Yo and Chris Brown.

Through reciprocal agreements with foreign societies, BMI also represents such international chart-toppers as British breakout artist James Blunt (PRS) ["You're Beautiful"], Canadian rock group Nickelback (SOCAN), and Latin sensations Julieta Venegas (SGAE) and Reyli (SACM).

BMI film and television composers enjoyed impressive success, contributing music to 78 percent of all network primetime television shows and 24 of the 25 top-grossing films released during the fiscal year. BMI songwriters were awarded the majority of the Grammy and CMA awards, the Blues Awards and the Downbeat Jazz Poll. BMI classical composer Yehudi Wyner won the Pulitzer Prize in music, and Broadway celebrated the music of BMI songwriters with the multiple Tony-winning hit, Jersey Boys.

Lim, a double major in Film Scoring and Contemporary Writing & Production, received the scholarship at the Boston, Mass., school during a presentation by BMI composer and 1977 Berklee graduate Richard Gibbs, in whose name this year's scholarship is given; Doreen Ringer-Ross, BMI Vice President, Film/TV Relations; Berklee President Roger Brown; and Berklee Film Scoring Department Chair Don Wilkins.

The BMI Film Scoring Scholarship is a yearly tuition scholarship chosen on the basis of compositional maturity and talent, as well as financial need. Each year, the scholarship is given in the name of a noted BMI composer. Gibbs, this year's honored composer, taught a master class on film scoring as part of the ceremony.

Gibbs' film scoring credits include Dr. Doolittle, Say Anything, Fatal Instinct, Ten Things I Hate About You, 28 Days and many others. He has also scored many television shows, including the first season of The Simpsons, and was musical director for The Tracey Ullman Show. His performing credits include several years as keyboard player with rock band Oingo Boingo and tours with Chaka Khan and Robert Palmer; he subsequently became music director for Chaka Khan. He has also worked with such diverse artists as Korn, Melissa Etheridge, Aretha Franklin, the Staples, Tom Waits and Tom Jones.

Originally from Seoul, Korea, Hanna Lim moved to Oklahoma at age 17 and earned a degree in Economics and Chinese at the University of Michigan. After four years working at a venture capital firm in Calif., she decided to pursue music full time, enrolling at Berklee to study film scoring. Currently, she works as the U.S. representative/writer for B.I.G. Entertainment, an entertainment company she founded with two other Berklee alumni that specializes in pop music production, recording and artist management in Korea. Lim plans to graduate in the fall and move to Los Angeles to start a career in the film and television music business.

BMI honored the composers and songwriters of the music from the past year's top-grossing films, top-rated prime-time network television series and highest-ranking cable television shows at its annual Film & Television Awards dinner on May 12. Held at the Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills, the black-tie gala was hosted by BMI President and CEO Frances W. Preston. Preston and Doreen Ringer Ross, BMI's Vice President of Film/TV Relations, gave out more than 100 awards during the ceremonies.

One of the highlights of the evening was the presentation of the BMI Richard Kirk Award for Outstanding Career Achievement to composer/artist Mark Mothersbaugh. Named after late BMI Vice President Richard Kirk, the prestigious award is given annually to the composer who has made significant contributions to film and TV music. Former recipients of the award include John Barry, Randy Edelman, Danny Elfman, Charlie Fox, Jerry Goldsmith, Earle Hagen, Michael Kamen, Alan Menken, Thomas Newman, Mike Post, Lalo Schifrin, Alan Silvestri, Richard and Robert Sherman, W.G. "Snuffy" Walden, John Williams, Patrick Williams and Hans Zimmer.

Mark Mothersbaugh Mike Post

One of the most unique and prolific contemporary composers in film, television, interactive media and commercials, Mothersbaugh was a founding member of influential rock group Devo, parlaying his avant-garde musical background into the world of scoring for filmed and animated entertainment. An artist both musically and in the literal definition, Mothersbaugh has created an aural framework with his scores for the forthcoming films Lords of Dogtown and The Life Aquatic, as well as having scored the hugely successful Rugrats television, stage and film franchise. He has also scored a diverse array of films and television shows, including Thirteen, The Royal Tenenbaums, Rushmore, 200 Cigarettes, The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle, Happy Gilmore, The Mind of the Married Man, Power Puff Girls, Pee Wee's Playhouse, Beakman's World and more. With over 100 credits in the medium including over 400 commercial credits, Mothersbaugh is also co-owner of Mutato Muzika, an umbrella company that is home to a full-time staff of composers and music editors.

Korn

At the dinner, Mothersbaugh was honored by some of the directors he's worked with, as well as by the characters from Rugrats. Director Wes Anderson (Bottle Rocket, The Royal Tenenbaums, The Life Aquatic) called Mothersbaugh a "conceptual artist...his studio is kind of like Andy Warhol's factory. He's very versatile, his mind is constantly spinning and coming up with different things, and he's not locked into any one direction. He's more interested in trying everything."

"What Mark brings to my movies that's the most important to me has to do with the tone to them," said Anderson. "He's drawn to something - his sense of humor and a sort of wistfulness to him - that is the right kind of chemistry for my movies. It fixes the oddness of the movies and mixes into it something that has to be just right, and somehow he knows where that needs to fall."

Director Catherine Hardwicke (Thirteen, Lords of Dogtown) said she was a fan of Motherbaugh's work and wanted him to score her directorial debut Thirteen but was afraid he might not want to do the low-budget film. "I just tried to think of things that would get him excited about doing it," she said. Describing a scene in the movie that she thought would appeal to his creative side, she said she asked him, "Mark would you be interested in creating the sound of brain cells popping?"

Hardwicke went on to describe Mothersbaugh as, "Quirky, crazy, super imaginative, super creative...you don't know what the answer will be and that's the fun of it. He will surprise you with something you didn't plan on, or didn't anticipate. That's what I like, I want to be surprised," she said. "He wants to make it work and delight you too. He gets into a character's head and understands that words can be too heavy handed. I think his music helps carry us places and makes us feel things."

Other top winners at the BMI Film & Television Awards included legendary composer Mike Post, who received the most nods with three for Law & Order, Law & Order: SVU, and Law & Order: CI. Also feted were double winning composers Don Davis for The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, David Newman for Daddy Day Care and The Cat In The Hat, Theodore Shapiro for Along Came Polly and Starsky & Hutch, Rolfe Kent for Freaky Friday and Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde, Teddy Castellucci for Anger Management and 50 First Dates, Pete Townshend for CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and CSI: Miami, and Rob Cairns for The Bachelor and The Bachelorette.

BMI also honored the composers of the highest-ranking cable television shows of the year, including Butch Hartman and Guy Moon for Fairly Oddparents and Danny Phantom, Mark and Bob Mothersbaugh for All Grown Up, Stewart Copeland for The Amanda Show, Douglas Cuomo for Sex and the City, and Brian S. Friedman and Rick A. Friedman II for Punk'd.

The Most Performed Song from a Motion Picture was awarded to the band Korn for their song "Did My Time" from Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life. "Did My Time" was written by Jonathan Davis, David Silveria, Munky, Fieldy and Head, and published by Evileria Music, Fieldysnuttz Music, Gintoe Music, Musik Munk Publishing and Stratosphericyoness Music.

Upon closer inspection, however, the Santa Clarita, California trio reveals that there’s a brain behind all the riffing and pummeling; in fact, there’s a very deliberate sense of songcraft to the group’s music.

"Just because we have heavy songs doesn't mean they’re typical headbanger songs", says Sean Danielsen, the group’s singer, guitarist, and lyricist. "The one thing we’re all influenced by is a good song. Nirvana is something we all agree on, but we also like the Beatles -- that stuff is timeless. A great song never gets old, no matter what the trends are. I even like James Taylor and music like that."

Along with drummer Derek Gledhill and bassist Ryan Martin, Danielsen fulfills that promise throughout the band’s self-titled debut album on Lava Records. With a nod to such ‘90s rock stalwarts as Korn and Faith No More, Smile Empty Soul rages through anthems like “Nowhere Kids” (think “My Generation” for the X-Games set) and “Bottom of a Bottle” while leaving room for such introspective, acoustic-based tunes as “This Is War” and “For You.”

"I'm actually a fairly happy guy,” Danielsen says about his sometimes dark lyrics, “especially right now. But no matter how happy I am, there are still a lot of problems in everyday life -- and I just want to write about those things because it helps me. And hopefully, people can relate and it might help them, too."

As for tags, the group doesn’t mind being called “heavy,” but disdains “metal.” "We just don't like the term," says Gledhill, while Martin adds, "If anything, we're more alternative rock. But I'd just call us rock.”

Country crossover trio Dixie Chicks scored three awards for Best Country Album (Home), Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal and Best Country Instrumental. BMI represented songwriters receiving two awards each that evening included: Eminem, The Funk Brothers, Herbie Hancock, B.B. King, and Thomas Newman. Madukwu Chinwah and Rashid Lonnie Lynn shared the award for Best R&B Song (“Love of My Life (An Ode to Hip Hop”)).

A number of BMI songwriters were honored with special Recording Academy Awards. Co-sponsored by BMI, the four day local music event devoted exclusively to Northern California music will be held August 22-25 with over 135 bands playing at 15 clubs in San Francisco.

San Francisco has a strong tradition of great music and experienced music industry professionals,” says Condon. “This festival is for all of Northern California to celebrate the decades of world class rock and roll that continues year after year in spite of the industry’s ups and downs.”

This year heavy-hitting national acts including BMI's Smash Mouth (Interscope), Third Eye Blind (Elektra) and Stroke 9 (Cherry/Universal), as well as Papa Roach (DreamWorks) have stepped up to give Nadine’s Wild Weekend a nod of accreditation as sponsors. In fact, DreamWorks Records has seized the opportunity to place Papa Roach’s CD, lovehatetragedy, in the special Nadine’s Wild Weekend/LIVE 105/Tower Records sales display that will be up during the month of August.

"You have to support the home team,” said Patrick Jordan of DreamWorks. “Nadine’s Wild Weekend offers Papa Roach hometown fans the opportunity to feel that the band is there, supporting them, even though they are on the road with Eminem and Korn.”

Steve Harwell, front man for Smash Mouth adds: “The San Francisco Music scene rocks and so does Nadine’s Wild Weekend.”

Stephan Jenkins of Third Eye Blind continues: "The San Francisco Bay Area is our creative home and the scene here has been under attack for years...We want bands, clubs, rehearsal spaces and a city full of freaks...Nadine's Wild Weekend is a good chance for the music scene’s survival."

Condon has a lot to be optimistic about. This year’s event received double the number of entries submitted for possible showcase slots than last year. Additionally, Condon has set up a promotional program for bands to participate in that offers prominent CD placement in local Tower Record Stores, ad spots on LIVE 105, advertising exposure in the official Nadine’s Wild Weekend pull out program contained in the August 21 issue of the SF Weekly, and web site presence on three major radio station sites. All of this is supported by a full-force outreach to the national music industry on their behalf.

“It is more important than ever for artists to have as many business skills as possible,” says Condon. “That's why we have created a situation where bands can witness and/or participate in promotions that mirror a major label release. Bands are making the music, so let’s give them the tools to sell their music, and let’s make it fun while we do it.”

Along with showcasing the next crop of talented bands, Condon wants to stimulate the industry’s consciousness and remind them that there are a lot of talented business people in the Bay Area that contribute to the overall big music industry picture and keep its wheels turning even when the chips are down.

“San Francisco is a hotbed for music industry professionals who have made a choice to live here while maintaining an industry-wide presence,” says Condon. “One of the vehicles in which we present this information to the industry is through our 'tip sheets' that highlight our local crop of managers, producers, publicists, agents, sound designers and game developers in addition to the bands.”

It is Condon’s belief that giving back is part of the cycle of good business, and Nadine’s Wild Weekend is committed to the support of music-related charities. This year’s charity beneficiary is San Francisco-based Active Music, which will benefit from the sale of the commemorative “Nadine’s Wild Weekend 2002” compilation CD of Wild Weekend bands that will be sold at all of the clubs and at participating Tower Records' locations.

Active Music's mission is to use the power of music to raise sustainable funding, awareness, and activism for charitable causes and programs. Members of the Active Music team have successfully partnered with more than 100 artists to produce over 400 benefit events attended by more than 1.5 million people, generating 15 million media impressions and raising millions of dollars for the nonprofit community. In 2001, the team produced three benefit events that raised over $1.3 million for nonprofit organizations.

The first Nadine's Wild Weekend (NWW) was in 7 clubs with 70 bands over 2 1/2 days. The second NWW bumped up to 10 clubs with 100 bands over 3 days and included the opening night bash at the Fillmore starring Stroke 9, just as they were releasing their hit single, "Little Black Backpack." Last year, the event featured 135 bands in 30 shows in 20 clubs over 4 days, and the closing show featured Jason Newsted's first post-Metallica project, Echobrain.

With its fifth album, Untouchables (Epic/Immortal), the group ups the ante, capitalizing on the rap-metal mania while looking well beyond it.

Leadoff track (and first single) "Here to Stay" features an ultra-heavy bassline, menacing guitar work and Jonathan Davis's trademark straightforward, angst-ridden vocals, while elsewhere the group delves into knockabout punk on "Wake Up Hate" and the softer melodicism of "Hollow Life." The approach clearly worked: Untouchables debuted at number two, kept out of the top spot only by omnipresent rapper Eminem.

Throughout its career, Korn has garnered no small share of controversy. Employing some of the same shock tactics as Marilyn Manson, the group can sometimes skirt the limits of what some might define as "good taste." Yet the muscularity of Korn's music and its intelligent lyrics have won legions of fans and swayed some of its harshest critics.

The band began its path to the top as LAPD, a hard rocking outfit based out of Bakersfield, California. In 1993, LAPD guitarists James "Munky" Shaffer and Brian "Head" Welch, bassist Reginald "Fieldy Snuts" Arvizu, and drummer David Silveria joined forces with Davis - then a mortuary science student - and the Korn name was born.

Relentless touring in support of Ozzy Osbourne, Marilyn Manson and Megadeth led to gold certifications for the group's first two albums. By 1998's multi-platinum Follow the Leader, the group had established itself as a major force in its own right, headlining Lollapalooza and winning the reinstatement of a Michigan high school student who had been suspended for wearing one of the group's t-shirts to class. (The high school administrator had deemed the group "indecent, vulgar and obscene," although the shirt in question merely featured the group's name.)

Later that same year Korn debuted the "Family Values Tour," featuring some of the heaviest rock/rap outfits around, including Limp Bizkit and Rammstein. It was with 1999's Issues, however, that the band reached a pinnacle, debuting at number one and spawning the eerie, high-charting single "Falling Away from Me." The album went quadruple platinum.

"We knew when we wrote the album that we were going to have to do something really great," Shaffer said at the time. "We had to move forward, push the boundaries, and create something very personal."

The same could be said of Untouchables, produced by Michael Beinhorn (Aerosmith, Hole, Soundgarden). As a result of the state-of-the-art equipment used in making the album, he says, "You can pick out and hear each individual instrument while everything's going on. Considering how dense the recording is - how many instruments are playing at any given time - it's pretty remarkable."

Now on an international tour, Korn is positioned to widen its influence even further. Parents everywhere be warned.

Not only does the band hail from the same Bakersfield, California breeding ground that spawned Korn, Adema actually shares bloodlines with their celebrated hometown heroes. Adema frontman Mark Chavez is actually the half-brother of Korn singer Jonathan Davis.

Pedigree notwithstanding, the members o Adema have made a name for themselves by injecting songs like "Freaking Out," "Everyone" and "Blow It Away" with generous doses of pop-inspired musicianship. Alternative Press magazine described the band's self-titled debut album "nu metal that . . . replaces nail-on-a-chalkboard screaming with actual harmonies and melodies." Echoing such sentiments, Spin magazine opined: "Adema commercialize the Korn sound with two new accessories: hooks and looks."

Adema was formed from the ashes of two popular Bakersfield metal acts, Juice and SexArt. After a year of rehearsing, the band recorded demos so impressive that two-dozen record labels competed for their services. A victorious Arista Records sequestered the band in a Northern California cabin, and these intensive writing sessions resulted in the material featured on the band's debut album.

Co-produced by Wallflowers guitarist Tobias Miller and Bill Appleberry, Adema's album is a hard-fought labor of love. "We put a lot of pressure on ourselves to come up with an honest record," Chavez told Revolver magazine. "We wanted to make the music - not who I'm related to - the issue."

Judging from the rave reviews they've received, Adema can consider their mission accomplished.
