Juan Luis Guerra Leads Latin Grammy Nominees

BMI singer/songwriter Juan Luis Guerra leads the list of nominees for the 8th Annual Latin Grammy Awards, announced August 29 at a press conference held at club Mansion in Miami. The Latin Grammy ceremony will be held November 8 at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.

Guerra scored five nominations, including Album of the Year, Best Merengue Album, Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Tropical Song, which has he won twice in previous years. In addition, The Latin Recording Academy has named Guerra the 2007 “Person of the Year”.

BMI songwriter/artists Ricky Martin and Calle 13 tied with four nominations each, while Shakira scored a nomination for her “Beautiful Liar” duet with Beyonce.

Martin was nominated for Album of the Year, Best Male Pop Vocal Album, Best Long Form Music Video, and Record of the Year for “Tu Recuerdo (Your Memory)”. Calle 13 received nominations for Album of the Year and Best Urban Music Album for Residente O Visitante, Best Short Form Music Video for "Hay Un Son," and Best Urban Song for "Pal Norte".

Additional BMI songwriter/artists nominated for Latin Grammy’s include Pepe Aguilar, Cristian Castro, Grupo Montez de Durango, Kinky, Panda, Elvis Crespo, Los Horoscopos de Durango, Ivy Queen Graciela Beltran, Oscar D’Leon and Pablo Olivares. The 8th Annual Latin Grammy Awards will be broadcast live on the Univision Network from 8 – 11 p.m. ET/PT.

BMI Acoustic Lounge Gets Latin Flavor

Members of Latin Grammy-nominated funk band Kinky stopped by a recent edition of BMI's monthly Acoustic Lounge series to catch a performance by emerging BMI Latin singer/songwriter Crisantes.

Raised between Nogales, Arizona, and Culiacán, Sinaloa (Mexico), Crisantes performs an Anglo form of pop-rock, composes songs in both English and Spanish, plays a multitude of instruments, and has just released his self-titled debut. The Mexican/American artist was also featured on the fifth edition of BMI's new "See It Hear First" podcast series.

Kinky, the Monterrey, Mexico quintet that caused quite a stir among music industry insiders and critics with its 2002 self-titled debut, was in town on a stop during their current tour.

The BMI Acoustic Lounge series is held the first Monday of every month at Hollywood landmark Genghis Cohen and is another chapter in BMI's long standing commitment to present the finest talent in the singer/songwriter genre. The free show features acoustic performances in an intimate setting as well as networking opportunities with other songwriters and BMI representatives.

Nashville Divas Take Manhattan

BMI New York will host "Nashville Divas in the Round" at the Living Room (Ludlow Street between Stanton & Rivington) on April 20 at 6pm. This unique showcase will feature some of Music City's best female singer/songwriters including Kylie Sackley, Shelly Fairchild, Stephony Smith and Lisa Carver. Admission is free.

Kylie Sackley, 22, currently resides in Nashville, more than 10,000 miles from her hometown in Port Douglas, Queensland, Australia where she conquered the Aussie country music world, winning the 2002 Country Music Association of Australia's coveted "Best New Talent" Award. Shortly after the CMAA, the award-winning Sackley ventured to Nashville to further develop her talents as a songwriter and explore the possibility of breaking into the US market as a performing artist. She currently works in Nashville as a staff songwriter for Faith Hill producer Scott Hendricks' Big Tractor Music Publishing, where she is already making waves in Music City. Sackley co-wrote LeAnn Rimes first single "Nothin 'Bout Love Makes Sense" with Gary Burr and Joel Feeney off her new album This Woman, which was a top 5 single on Billboard and R&R. She has also secured a song written with Big and Rich's John Rich and Rodney Clawson to be released on the upcoming Faith Hill record.

Shelly Fairchild
Her voice conveys the blues of her Mississippi Delta home and the soulful power of a passionate woman who has been "singing with everything I've got" since she began performing as a child. Her edgy style conveys the confidence of a small-town girl from Clinton, Miss., bold enough to head out on her own and earn lead roles in major musicals and national theatrical tours, yet sensitive enough to write heart-tugging stories about love and family as well as steamy tales about desire and living life to the hilt. Her dynamic stage presence conveys the experience of a stage actress and the live-wire energy and hot-blooded emotion of a risk-taker who can open the throttle and roar or slow down to caress a lyric with intimate conviction. Her Columbia Records debut, Ride, is a one-of-a-kind introduction that suggests this country singer won't be held back by preconceptions about Nashville or contemporary country music. Shelly co-wrote four songs on her album, including "You Don't Lie Here Anymore." Her influences range from Patsy Cline and Dolly Parton to Hank Williams Jr. and Travis Tritt.

Stephony Smith
BMI Award-winning songwriter Stephony Smith's list of accolades is unparalleled. An eight-time BMI Million-Air Award winner, she was named both Songwriter of the Year and her Faith Hill and Tim McGraw #1 hit "It's Your Love" was named Song of the Year at the 1998 BMI Country Awards. The song also earned a ACM Award for Song of the Year, as well as a Grammy and CMA nomination. She was named NSAI's Songwriter of the Year and has four NSAI #1 awards. Lisa Carver
Lisa carver is a native Charleston, South Carolina girl, who has been part of the Nashville underground music scene for years. She is a songwriter first and foremost, but has always enjoyed entertaining audiences worldwide with her eclectic, three-dimensional story songs. However, over the last few years, after becoming a grand prize winner in the John Lennon Songwriting Fest, she began getting her collection of audial art cut by today's country artists ranging from Tim McGraw, Shelly Fairchild, Julie Roberts and Jessica Andrews, to Willie Nelson. Her vocal style is pretty much school of Prine, while her writing style lies somewhere between Kinky Friedman and Kris Kristofferson. BMI hosted a champagne reception last night (8/31) in honor of its 2004 Latin Grammy nominees at Le Clafoutis restaurant in Los Angeles. Co-sponsors of the event included Heineken, Sirius Satellite Radio and Taittinger champagne. Beverages were provided by Bacardi, Baffert’s, Cazadores and Kettle One.

Stars in attendance at the BMI Latin Grammy nominees soiree included Café Tacuba, Robi Draco Rosa, Akwid, Gustavo Santaolalla, Kinky, Control Machete, Banda El Recodo, Lupillo Rivera, Area 305, Tanghetto, Mario Quintero, Lara, Paulo Jobim, Superlitio and Anibal Kerpel, as well as actor Cheech Marin and numerous Latin music industry executives. Kinky

The question most asked of the band Kinky has to do with their name. "It came by accident when we played our first gig," says vocalist Gilberto Cerezo. "There was a flyer with a girl doing kinky things. But we've developed our own theory: We take music, turn it a little bit and twist it."

Styish dance grooves spiced with cumbia and norteño powered Kinky's self-titled debut, and their follow-up, Atlas , anchors this sound with potent rock. Monterrey, Mexico, the group's hometown, is fertile ground for cross-genre experimentation. "Friendships with other musicians build a bridge to mix the styles," notes guitarist Carlos Chairez. "The generals aren't fighting with each other."

Cerezo observes that the art and cinema scenes are similarly inclusive. "It's a feeling of honesty and newness that's almost naive. It's a city that's growing, but you feel the vibe of a little town. You can hear the trains passing by, the church bells, and see friends in the streets. It's not like the big cities that have madness."

Kinky transported mobile recording equipment to Quintana Roo and settled into a colony of bungalows in the Mexican jungle to work on Atlas . "We were focused and relaxed, composing in our underwear," recalls Cerezo. In Los Angeles, they tracked with engineer Thom Russo (System of a Down, Audioslave) and added live instruments and English lyrics to the mix.

An electrifying live act, Kinky plays to huge festival audiences across Europe, South America, and recently for 10,000 fans at California's Coachella Festival. This summer they'll tour with Ozomatli. "The best feeling is to play to new audiences," concludes Chairez. "We don't know what's going to happen and that's great."

Songwriter/artist/producer Robi Draco Rosa took home three mentions, while Mexican hip-hop brothers Akwid, Cuban singwr/songwriter Albita and Latin Grammy Award-winning producer/songwriter Gustavo Santaolalla each earned two. Molotov bassist/vocalist Miguel "Mickey" Huidobro also got two nominations for the smash "Hit Me," one as a songwriter for Best Rock Song and another with the band for Best Video.

BMI Presents Latin Lingo III Showcase: Diony, Sano-In & Miah to Perform

Performing rights organization BMI will present its “Latin Lingo III” showcase on Thursday, February 20 at Club Groove, (125 McDougal Street at the corner of West 3rd) in NYC. Showtime is 7 p.m. – 9 p.m. and admission is FREE. Started by BMI’s Jessie Lema, Associate Director of Latin Music, the series features up-and-coming BMI Latin songwriters from the U.S., Puerto Rico and South America.

Opening in the 7 p.m. slot, Diony, a young romantic Salsa singer/songwriter native of Colombia. He began singing at Festivals in his native Barraquilla at a very early age. By 17 he’d written his first song and, two years later, he relocated to the U.S where he stated working with well-known producer Rene Leyva.

Sano-In will be up next with his unique brand of Latin hip-hop. Born in the Dominican Republic he relocated as a child to Spanish Harlem. He uses his multi-cultural background to deliver the hip-hop message in English, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese with sometimes hilarious results. Sano-In has been working with Wu-Tang Clan producer Choco.

Miah (pronounced mee-ah) will close the show. The three sisters [Meylin, Zulay and Mavis] share Latin Soul, Pop, R&B and Rock sensibilities. They first appeared together in Paul Simon’s Broadway production of Capeman and it was Simon who encouraged them to form the group. They have since collaborated with a number of well-known songwriters.
