BMI honored the composers of music featured in the past year's top-grossing films, top-rated prime-time network television series and highest-ranking cable network programs May 21 at its annual Film & Television Awards. Held at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel, the black-tie gala was hosted by BMI President & CEO Del Bryant and Film/TV Relations Vice President Doreen Ringer Ross, who handed out more than 80 BMI Crystals throughout the evening.

A highlight of the ceremony took the form of the Richard Kirk Award presentation to esteemed composer Christopher Young. Named after late BMI Vice President Richard Kirk, the prestigious award is given annually to a composer who has made significant contributions to film and television music. As the 2008 honoree, Christopher Young joins an elite list of peers that includes George S. Clinton, Harry Gregson-Williams (PRS), Jerry Goldsmith, Thomas Newman, Michael Kamen, Mark Mothersbaugh, Danny Elfman, Alan Menken, Mike Post, Lalo Schifrin and John Williams.

Award-winning composer Christopher Young has carved out an enviable niche in the upper pantheon of Hollywood composers. The UCLA Film School alumnus first turned heads with fiendish scores for horror and science fiction projects, and he proceeded to garner accolades for work on macabre and fantastical films including Hellraiser, its Saturn award-winning sequel and Species, along with BMI award-winners Ghost Rider, The Grudge and The Exorcism of Emily Rose. Young became a master of suspense, composing music for thrillers including Copycat and BMI honoree Entrapment, as well as dramatic and critical tours-de-force including Golden Globe nominee The Shipping News, Wonder Boys, Rounders and BMI award-winner Swordfish. He also fleshed out the haunting nuances and electrifying action sequences of box office gold Spiderman 3. The New Jersey native has also excelled in television composition, earning two Emmy nominations for telefilms Last Flight Out and Norma Jean & Marilyn. A dedicated mentor, Young has taught classes at USC, served as an advisor for the Sundance Institute's Film Composers Lab and created an innovative residential development to house aspiring composers in Los Angeles.

BMI also presented the Classic Contribution Award to Peter Golub in recognition of his progressive direction of the Sundance Institute's Film Composers Lab for the past ten years. An accomplished composer of film, theatre, ballet and concert works, Golub is a natural fit for the lab, which aims to enhance the role of music in independent film. His acute composition work includes scores for documentaries I.O.U.S.A. and Wordplay, along with films including The Great Debaters. Universally acknowledged as an unparalleled apprenticeship for the next generation of composing elite, the workshop has invaluably benefited from Golub's creative intuition and steady guidance.

BMI's Emmy-winning composers were also feted; the accomplished list included George Fenton (PRS) for the awe-inspiring documentary Planet Earth: Pole to Pole; William Ross for the 79th Annual Academy Awards; Lenny Williams for Nature: Christmas in Yellowstone; Yoav Goren for The XX Olympic Winter Games: The Stories of Torino; Katreese Barnes for Saturday Night Live's "Dick in a Box"; Gary Deinstadt, Billy Barber, Ron Komie, Danny Pelfrey and David Traugh for Guiding Light; along with Wes Boatman and John Henry Kreitler for "Love is Ecstasy" from Passions.

Legendary rocker turned lauded composer Pete Townshend (PRS) took home the evening's most awards, with three BMI Crystals for CSI, CSI: Miami and CSI: NY. Composers garnering two awards each were Steve Jablonsky for Transformers and Desperate Housewives; Rupert Gregson-Williams (PRS) for Bee Movie and I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry; George Fenton for Fool's Gold and Planet Earth: Pole to Pole; Mychael Danna for Surf's Up and Medium; Aaron Zigman for Step Up 2: The Streets and Why Did I Get Married?; Kevin Kiner for Amazing Race and CSI: Miami; Mike Post for Law & Order and Law & Order SVU; and Matt Koskenmaki for Hell's Kitchen and The Ultimate Fighter.

With credits including "Sin City," "Shark Boy and Lava Girl in 3-D," "Dead Calm," "The Crow," "The Insider," "CSI: Miami," "The Negotiator," "Blow," "Open Water" and more, he has become known for his blending of traditional ethnic music and ambient sounds. He started his scoring career after picking up on rhythms in patient vocalizations at an Australian hospital for the mentally ill, where he worked as an orderly. His experiments with recordings of human and insect sounds and industrial machinery led him to create the early industrial band SPK. His first score was for director Philip Noyce and producer/director George Miller with "Dead Calm," for which he won an Australian Film Industry Award for Best Score.

Kevin Eubanks

Lalo Schifrin

Stu Phillips

Honoring Revell at the dinner via video messages were directors Robert Rodriguez, Phillip Noyce, Danny Cannon, David Twohy and Carl Franklin, as well as journalist Jon Burlingame. Chucky, the star of the "Chucky" film series for which Revell scored "The Bride of Chucky," narrated the video salute to Revell.

Calling Revell, "...the best secret weapon a director can ever have," director Noyce described working with him on the film "Dead Calm." "Graeme immediately sparked at the material and the opportunity. He hadn't scored a film before, but he had that great composing sense. We wanted a composer who would bring a completely different score to a very elemental movie. Graeme started at the idea of taking sounds that were part of the movie and incorporating them into the score; sound of wind, sound of water.

Mike Post

Pete Townshend

"The movie was completely different once we put Graeme's score in," he added. "He added tension, he added pace, he created drama, and he gave the film a unique aural quality."

Revell's skill at collaboration with the director was a theme that permeated throughout the evening. "Honest," "innovative," "soulful" and "a true renaissance man" were just some of the descriptions that the directors offered. His vast range of musical talents were lauded, including his use of a wide array of ethnic sounds and voices, atmospheric noises and wide ranging knowledge of obscure percussion and voice styles. His encompassing musical style constantly delivers a fresh new sound and approach to each score he has done. Cannon said, "Graeme is modern and he is up to date. That's what is great about him. He is so willing to use new techniques, new inspirations and is always willing to try something different, move the goalposts."

BMI also gave out the award for the Most Performed Song From A Motion Picture to the Counting Crows and their publishing companies for the "Shrek 2" song, "Accidentally in Love." The award is given annually to a composer for his outstanding work and contributions in motion picture and television music. The black-tie, invitation-only dinner will also honor the composers of the top-grossing films of the past year as well as the top-rated prime-time network television series and cable programs. BMI President & CEO Del Bryant will host the awards along with BMI's Vice President of Film/TV Music, Doreen Ringer Ross.
Revell, a New Zealand native who's known for the blending of traditional ethnic music and ambient sounds, ghostly vocals and tribal percussion, most recently scored "The Hard Goodbye" vignette in director Robert Rodriguez's Sin City. His composing and ominous percussive film noir score fuels Mickey Rourke's frenzy of vengeance in that segment of Sin City.

Revell started his scoring career after picking up on rhythms in patient vocalizations at an Australian hospital for the mentally ill, where he was working as an orderly. His experiments with recordings of human and insect sounds and industrial machinery led him to create the early industrial band SPK. Their cinematic theatrics, featuring slides and films of surgery and the use of flame-throwers and oil drums, convinced directors George Miller and Philip Noyce to employ him on Dead Calm, for which he won an Australian Film Industry Award for Best Score. His unique style has been responsible for the riveting atmosphere of some of Hollywood's most tense thrillers, such as Open Water and The Negotiator, dark dramas including The Crow, Blow and The Insider, and exhilarating actioners like Collateral Damage, Chronicles of Riddick and Pitch Black.

Revell worked in the swashbuckling style of Korngold and Williams on Robert Rodriguez's From Dusk Till Dawn and he has furthermore proven an aptitude at scoring big budget blockbusters with Spawn, Daredevil, and Tomb Raider. Proving his sound can successfully cross both genres and platforms, Revell's mixture of melody and sound design was instrumental in setting the mood for the first season of "CSI: Miami."

The BMI award for Outstanding Career Achievement is named after former BMI Vice President Richard Kirk.

Even if he had only written the theme for Gettysburg, Randy Edelman would have earned a permanent place in the pantheon of film and television scorers. But that stirring piece of Americana — penned in 1993 for the Civil War epic, since gone on to numerous incarnations including perennial performances at July 4th celebrations around the country — is just one part of this composer’s story.

Edelman has been kicking around the music business since 1970 — first as an arranger, then a singer/songwriter, eventually becoming a popular recording artist, playing to tens of thousands of fans in the U.S. and England.

But it was as a composer for movies and TV in the ’80s and ’90s that he finally found his niche and his greatest success to date. On May 14, he joined the distinguished roster of the composers who have won BMI’s top honor for film composers, the Richard Kirk Award for Outstanding Career Achievement.

Director Rob Cohen (Dragonheart, XXX ) describes him as the classic Central Casting notion of a contemporary musician — “crazy, hyperkinetic” — but on a recent visit to his Beverly Hills home, Edelman was clearly humbled by the honor.

“It means a lot to me,” he says. “To have been on this journey and gotten to this place, to feel that something you’ve done is appreciated, is wonderful. It’s a good feeling to think that people have noticed.”

In fact, millions of people have noticed. Whether it’s the soaring strings of Dragonheart (1996), the tender piano of Come See the Paradise (1990), the evocative sounds of The Last of the Mohicans (1992), the warmth of While You Were Sleeping (1995) or the colorful Shanghai Noon (2000), Randy Edelman’s music has made its mark on moviegoers. And TV watchers too, considering the popularity of his catchy MacGyver theme (1985) and the enduring “Adventures of Brisco County Jr.” (1993), the theme for a short-lived Fox series that found new life as a sports anthem on NBC.

Edelman is at a loss to explain why his music resonates with so many listeners. “I’d like to think that, musically, I’m adaptable to different styles, and that I can deliver emotionally to the picture and the director something that enhances their vision,” he says.

The people with whom he works, however, are effusive in their praise of Edelman’s abilities. One word crosses everyone’s lips: melody. “Randy is in the great tradition of melody writers,” says Cohen, his collaborator on five films, beginning with Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story (1993). “Randy’s music goes right into the soul.”

“He’s one of the great songmeisters of this era,” adds director-producer Ivan Reitman, who has used Edelman on several comedies, including Ghostbusters II (1989), Kindergarten Cop (1990) and Six Days, Seven Nights (1998). “His symphonic scores are chockablock full of wonderful melodies that inform the emotionality of the scenes, and sweep you away in a kind of sweetness and joy that works well for comedies.”

Ronald Maxwell, the director of Gettysburg and this year’s Gods and Generals , says: “Randy is a great melodist. What makes him special is that the melody seems to be derived from the character and the moment. He is able to capture the deep emotion of these characters and what they’re going through.”

Perhaps that’s because Edelman has been through a lot himself. Born in Paterson, N.J., he began playing piano at the age of 5 and continued piano studies through high school and at the Cincinnati Music Conservatory. There, his classical-music studies were augmented by outside work as an arranger for James Brown’s King Records.

After college, he was signed by CBS’s April/Blackwood Music as a songwriter and soon embarked on a career as a singer, opening for The Carpenters and Frank Zappa in the early ‘70s. He got his feet wet in film scoring with the original Kennedy assassination-conspiracy film Executive Action (1973) and a handful of TV movies.

But success as a solo act, especially in England, whisked him away from Hollywood. Barry Manilow turned Edelman’s “Weekend in New England” into a top-10 hit stateside, and the songwriter became a fixture on such U.K. shows as “Top of the Pops,” even weighing in with talk-show host David Frost on the 1980 election of Ronald Reagan as president. His last solo album as an artist was 1985’s Switch of the Seasons .

Actor-turned-producer Henry Winkler invited Edelman to score the medical drama Ryan’s Four (1983), and while that gig was short-lived, Winkler’s subsequent adventure series MacGyver was not. That, inevitably, led to offers for movies. The composer met Reitman on the comedy Feds (1988), and the result was music for the director’s Twins (1988) and Kindergarten Cop .

Some of Edelman’s biggest hits have been matters of good timing or unexpected opportunity. Roger Birnbaum, a former record-company executive who was a production boss at 20th Century-Fox, recommended Edelman as a composer for director Alan Parker’s wartime drama Come See the Paradise . Although the film was not a commercial success, Edelman’s poignant theme became one of the most widely heard tunes in years thanks to its consistent use in coming-attraction trailers.

His work on Last of the Mohicans resulted in Golden Globe and British Academy Award nominations, and the soundtrack album — which he himself assembled when it appeared that no soundtrack would be issued — went platinum in no time. And his fresh, inventive scores for comedies such as The Mask (1994) have made those films even funnier.

Edelman’s reputation as television’s premier sports-theme writer is actually the result of producers’ repeated use of his many anthem-style pieces from various movie and obscure-TV scores. He won a 1996 Emmy for his musical contributions to Summer Olympics telecasts.

Producer Birnbaum contrasts Edelman’s music for such diverse movies as My Cousin Vinny, Shanghai Noon and Angels in the Outfield, noting: “Randy’s versatility doesn’t pigeonhole him into being one kind of composer for one kind of movie. He has the ability to write for all kinds of stories, whether they’re dramatic or comedic.” Adds Winkler: “Somehow, he is able to translate life into music. It is filled with emotion, with inspiring sounds that go right up your spine.”

Edelman — now at work on Nia Vardalos’ new musical comedy Connie and Carla and the DreamWorks holiday film Surviving Christmas starring Ben Affleck and James Gandolfini — continues to branch out in new directions. He recently wrote a concert piece, Transcontinental: A Mad Dash Across the U.S.A. , for conductor Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra.

What’s the best thing about his career? “The most fun is in the writing,” the composer confesses. “Being in a room by yourself and coming up with something that you think works. The kick is that that you get immediate feedback. You write it, you execute the recording, and you get to hear it back. And it’s going to be in a movie that’s already in the wind.”

An artist both musically and in the literal definition, Mothersbaugh has created an aural framework with his scores for the forthcoming films Lords of Dogtown and The Life Aquatic, as well as having scored the hugely successful Rugrats television, stage and film franchise. He has also scored a diverse array of films and television shows, including Thirteen, The Royal Tenenbaums, Rushmore, 200 Cigarettes, The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle, Happy Gilmore, The Mind of the Married Man, Power Puff Girls, Pee Wee's Playhouse, Beakman's World and more. With over 100 credits in the medium including over 400 commercial credits, Mothersbaugh is also co-owner of Mutato Muzika, an umbrella company that is home to a full-time staff of composers and music editors.

Korn

At the dinner, Mothersbaugh was honored by some of the directors he's worked with, as well as by the characters from Rugrats. Director Wes Anderson (Bottle Rocket, The Royal Tenenbaums, The Life Aquatic) called Mothersbaugh a "conceptual artist...his studio is kind of like Andy Warhol's factory. He's very versatile, his mind is constantly spinning and coming up with different things, and he's not locked into any one direction. He's more interested in trying everything."
"What Mark brings to my movies that's the most important to me has to do with the tone to them," said Anderson. "He's drawn to something - his sense of humor and a sort of wistfulness to him - that is the right kind of chemistry for my movies. It fixes the oddness of the movies and mixes into it something that has to be just right, and somehow he knows where that needs to fall."
Director Catherine Hardwicke (Thirteen, Lords of Dogtown) said she was a fan of Motherbaugh's work and wanted him to score her directorial debut Thirteen but was afraid he might not want to do the low-budget film. "I just tried to think of things that would get him excited about doing it," she said. Describing a scene in the movie that she thought would appeal to his creative side, she said she asked him, "Mark would you be interested in creating the sound of brain cells popping?"
Hardwicke went on to describe Mothersbaugh as, "Quirky, crazy, super imaginative, super creative...you don't know what the answer will be and that's the fun of it. He will surprise you with something you didn't plan on, or didn't anticipate. That's what I like, I want to be surprised," she said. "He wants to make it work and delight you too. He gets into a character's head and understands that words can be too heavy handed. I think his music helps carry us places and makes us feel things."
Other top winners at the BMI Film & Television Awards included legendary composer Mike Post, who received the most nods with three for Law & Order, Law & Order: SVU, and Law & Order: CI. Also feted were double winning composers Don Davis for The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, David Newman for Daddy Day Care and The Cat In The Hat, Theodore Shapiro for Along Came Polly and Starsky & Hutch, Rolfe Kent for Freaky Friday and Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde, Teddy Castellucci for Anger Management and 50 First Dates, Pete Townshend for CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and CSI: Miami, and Rob Cairns for The Bachelor and The Bachelorette.
BMI also honored the composers of the highest-ranking cable television shows of the year, including Butch Hartman and Guy Moon for Fairly Oddparents and Danny Phantom, Mark and Bob Mothersbaugh for All Grown Up, Stewart Copeland for The Amanda Show, Douglas Cuomo for Sex and the City, and Brian S.
Frederik Wiedmann has been named the 2004 BMI Film Scoring Scholarship recipient at Berklee College of Music, it was announced recently by Doreen Ringer-Ross, Vice President, Film/TV Relations at BMI. Wiedmann, a Berklee film scoring major from Stuttgart, Germany, was presented the scholarship on March 29 by Ringer-Ross and BMI composer Randy Edelman, in whose name this year's scholarship was given.

Seen here congratulating the 2004 BMI Film Scoring Scholarship winner are Michael Rendish, Assistant Chair, Berklee Film Scoring Department; Don Wilkins, Chair, Berklee Film Scoring Department; composer Randy Edelman; BMI's Doreen Ringer-Ross; Wiedmann; and Lee Eliot Berk, President, Berklee College of Music.

The BMI Film Scoring Scholarship is a yearly tuition scholarship given on the basis of compositional maturity and talent, as well as financial need. Each year the scholarship is given in the name of a noted BMI composer. As part of the ceremonies, Edelman taught a master class at Berklee in the Lawrence and Alma Berk Recital Hall.
"This scholarship continues our mission of supporting young and emerging composers at the college level," stated Ringer-Ross. "We support Berklee's commitment to excellence in music and film scoring and their determination to further the growth of talented, trained, and educated composers."
At age 12, inspired by his first CD of film music from "Dances With Wolves," Wiedmann became fascinated by music and its use in motion pictures. He started to compose his own music and met regularly with film composers in Germany to understand more about music for film, and the business of scoring. Wiedmann has studied voice, violin, guitar, and piano. While in Boston, he has composed scores for three graduate student films: "Gabriele 35," "Real Estate" and "The Wrinkle." Wiedmann will graduate from Berklee in August 2004.
Berklee Film Scoring Department Chair Don Wilkins said of Wiedmann: "Freddie's music is imaginative and evocative. He is fast on the intake and even faster on the delivery of his work. He always responds favorably to input and senses immediately how to translate dramatic concepts or musical suggestions into his own creative design."
Berklee is the only college to offer an undergraduate degree in Film Scoring, and it's one of the fastest growing majors in the college. The curriculum at Berklee is specifically designed to prepare students for careers in the music industry.
BMI composer Randy Edelman's many credits include "Gods and Generals" (2003), "Shanghai Knights" (2003), "The Whole Nine Yards" (2000), "Six Days, Seven Nights" (1998), "Anaconda" (1997), "Dragonheart" (1996), "While You Were Sleeping" (1995), "The Mask" (1994), "Gettysburg" (1993), "The Last of the Mohicans" (1992), "My Cousin Vinny" (1992), "Kindergarten Cop" (1990), "Ghostbusters II" (1989) and "Twins" (1988). He has also composed NBC's NFL Football Theme, NBC's Olympic Theme and the closing music for the Atlanta Olympic Games broadcast, for which he received an Emmy Award.
