The 13th Annual Hog's Breath Key West Songwriters Festival looms enticingly on the horizon. Presented by Cherry Heart Music and proudly supported by charter sponsor BMI, the event is slated for April 30 through May 4 in Key West, Florida. The festival revolves around five days and nights of more than 20 free shows, staged at an array of the island's most popular drinking holes and hot spots. Informal adaptations of Nashville's signature in-the-round acoustic showcases dominate much of the schedule, while this year, a street concert Saturday, May 3 featuring the Jeffrey Steele Band and Robert Earl Keen adds a Mardis Gras fillip to the mix.

Three River Music Signs Dave Pahanish

<dc:subject>Pahanish, Dave, Davidson, Dallas, Lindsey, Hillary, Country</dc:subject>

When it came to signing their first staff writer, new publishing company Three River Music didn't need to think twice. The company's co-founders combine the tour de force talents of Cole Wright, Hillary Lindsey and Dallas Davidson. The trio caught BMI songwriter Dave Pahanish's live show and signed him two days later. Cole Wright's brief essay captures a moment in time for a young, talented crew embarking on an exciting new path:

My good friend Perry Howard sent me a CD of Dave Pahanish on a Monday. I was immediately blown away. Dave was playing out the next night so I went to see him play. I was sold. Dave was playing again that Friday night. Hillary and Dallas had plans but I made them cancel and said "you have to see this guy immediately." Hillary and Dallas came to the bar around 9:30. Dave was singing a John Denver cover tune. When he was finished playing, Hillary turned to me and said, "We have to sign this guy immediately." Dallas completely agreed, and we were on our way. The energy that Dave delivers in his live show is infectious and overwhelming at times. We all knew that if he delivered even half of the emotion and passion into his writing as he did into his live show, we had a winner. His songs did not let us down. He imparts an age-old wisdom combined with fresh exciting melodies that form an undeniable musical presence. We signed him on that Sunday, two days after hearing his live show. We are excited about Dave and the formation of Three River Music -- three separate rivers, joining together to form Nashville's newest force in music publishing. -Cole Wright

Pictured are (standing): BMI's Jody Williams and Perry Howard; (seated): Three River Music co-founder Cole Wright, BMI songwriter Dave Pahanish, and Three River Music co-founders and hit songwriters Hillary Lindsey and Dallas Davidson.
During the first week of May, it's highly possible that not a single hit song will be written in Nashville; that week, the hits will instead pour out of a more tropical songwriting oasis as the Key West Songwriters' Festival invades Key West, Fla., May 3-7, 2006. The festival continues its successful run at the world-famous Hog's Breath Saloon, the rowdy home base for festivities.

Jeffrey Steele

Scotty Emerick

Tim Nichols

Each spring, top Music City tunesmiths, emerging talent and country fans from all over the globe gather to enjoy the event's intimate performance settings and soak up the sun. Shows offer listeners a unique glimpse into the stories behind hit songs and the minds that create them, thrusting the often unsung heroes of the hits into a well-deserved spotlight. Numerous neighborhood venues, all within walking distance of the Hog’s Breath, host performances daily. Easy bike rides and casual strolls to and from shows integrate participants warmly into the community.

Jedd Hughes

Vicki McGehee

The eleventh year of the festival boasts yet another stellar line-up. Nearly 50 BMI songwriters are scheduled to perform, featuring today's hit songs and over two decades' worth of favorites.
