Designed to thrust the writers behind today’s country hits into a deserved spotlight, the festival boasts intimate live performances in the midst of paradise. The neighborhood’s favorite live music venues will host performances daily, while the beloved Hog’s Breath Saloon again will serve as the event’s home base.

A founding sponsor, BMI has helped the festival evolve into a highly anticipated destination for Nashville hit makers.
Top BMI Writers, Publishers Honored at 54th Annual Country Awards; Merle Haggard Saluted as BMI Icon

BMI, the first home for country music, was also the first to honor the genre's songwriters and publishers with its own awards show in 1953. The tradition turned a healthy 54 years old this year as the BMI Country Awards were held Saturday, Nov. 4 at the performing right organization's Music Row offices. BMI President & CEO Del Bryant and Jody Williams, Vice President of Writer/Publisher Relations, Nashville, hosted the black-tie ceremony and presented Certificates of Achievement to the writers and publishers of the past year's 50 most-performed country songs in the BMI repertoire.

Country Awards Event Photos

Country Awards Song List

Merle Haggard Icon Feature

BMI and Country Music

Toby Keith's hit "As Good As I Once Was," co-written by Keith and Scotty Emerick, was named Song of the Year. Previously named Songwriter of the Year in 2001 and 2004, Keith also shared his third Songwriter of the Year crown with Ed Hill and Vicky McGehee, while Sony/ATV Music Publishing Nashville snagged Publisher of the Year honors for the fifth consecutive year. A stirring tribute to American legend Merle Haggard honored the newest BMI Icon, celebrating Haggard's open-ended relevancy and influence that span genres and generations.

Merle Haggard

Toby Keith

"As Good As I Once Was" landed the 38th Robert J. Burton Award for Most Performed Country Song of the Year for co-writers Toby Keith and Scotty Emerick, along with publishers Big Yellow Dog Music, Florida Cracker Music, Sony/ATV Tree and Tokeco Tunes. With tongue firmly in cheek, Keith's wry delivery sent the tune racing up the Billboard charts, where it resided for six weeks.

Vicky McGehee

Ed Hill

Vicky McGehee, Ed Hill and Toby Keith formed the three-way tie for Country Songwriter of the Year, as each laid claim to three of the top 50 award-winning songs. In the past year, McGehee's hits "All Jacked Up," "Hicktown" and "Like We Never Loved At All" helped cement her status as one of Music City's "go-to" hit songwriters. Songwriting veteran Ed Hill's track record is liberally scattered with hits; this year, Hill's "Georgia Rain," "Somebody's Hero" and "Songs About Me" earned him his first BMI Songwriter of the Year title. Country superstar and two-time NSAI Songwriter of the Year Toby Keith added a third BMI Songwriter of the Year trophy to his growing collection with the hits "Big Blue Note," "HonkyTonk U" and "As Good As I Once Was."
With 17 songs among this year's top 50, Sony/ATV Music Publishing Nashville (through its companies Sony/ATV Acuff Rose, Sony/ATV Songs LLC and Sony/ATV Tree) picked up its fifth consecutive Publisher of the Year win. The publishing powerhouse accumulated the highest percentage of copyright ownership thanks to award songs like "Believe," "Class Reunion (That Used To Be Us)," "Do You Want Fries With That," "God's Will," "Lot of Leavin' Left To Do," "Me and Charlie Talking," "My Give A Damn's Busted," "Nobody But Me," "Play Something Country," "She Don't Tell Me To" and "She Let Herself Go."
The capstone of the evening took the form of the Icon tribute to Merle Haggard, featuring performances by Martina McBride, John Anderson and Hank Williams Jr. By any conventional measure -- radio hits, albums and concert tickets sold, songs recorded by other artists, and awards and honors received over a career that's now in its fifth decade -- Merle Haggard qualifies as a giant of country music.
Haggard's numbers are staggering: 48 BMI Country Awards, nine BMI Pop Awards, a BMI R&B Award, and 16 BMI "Million-Air" awards for hits like "Big City," "The Fightin' Side of Me," "I Had A Beautiful Time," "Mama Tried," "Okie From Muskogee," "Today I Started Loving You Again" and "Workin' Man Blues," all from a catalog of songs that adds up to over 25 million performances and illustrates the legend's genre-bending mastery. A total of six CMA awards, 17 ACM awards, two Grammys and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award conspicuously dot Haggard's resume, but as valuable as such measures are, they don't begin to define the accomplishments that have earned the "Poet of the Common Man" his latest accolade.
As a songwriter, he boldly explored not just the most popular themes of love and heartbreak, but the changing economic and social landscape, American history and politics, patriotism, war, and his own experiences as a convict, a husband, a father and a musician. Using the often uncomplicated yet elegant forms handed down by his predecessors, he created -- and continues to add to -- an enduring body of work that resonates far beyond the world of country music while remaining firmly rooted within it. In recognition of his enduring commitment to tradition, consistent creativity and unshakable artistic integrity, BMI is proud to present Merle Haggard with its Icon Award.
The 2006 BMI Country Awards also honored songwriters Brett Beavers, Ronnie Dunn, Scotty Emerick, Aimee Mayo, Terry McBride, Tom Shapiro, Shaye Smith, Jeffrey Steele, George Teren, Keith Urban and Phillip White, who each supplied two songs to the top 50 list.
"Goodbye Time," co-written by Roger Murrah and James Dean Hicks, earned its second BMI Country Award this year; Conway Twitty's 1989 version won the first time around and Blake Shelton's remake garnered this year's recognition. Joe South's "(I Never Promised You A) Rose Garden," 1971's Country Song of the Year, won its seventh award this year thanks to Martina McBride's recent version. Lynn Anderson's 1970 version collected the song's first six awards.
Publishers winning three or more awards were Big Yellow Dog, Careers-BMG Music Publishing, EMI-Blackwood Music, Inc., Music of Stage Three, Sagrabeaux Songs, Songs of Windswept Pacific, Tokeco Tunes and Warner-Tamerlane Publishing Corp.

Indie Publisher Spotlight:Mentoring Role Helps Murrah Music Thrive

Indie Publisher Spotlight:
Mentoring Role Helps Murrah Music Thrive

In the highly competitive world of music publishing, it can sometimes
be difficult to find accord on even the most minor question.

Not so when the subject is Roger Murrah. In addition to a songwriting
career filled with hits for such luminaries as Waylon Jennings, Alan
Jackson and Alabama, Murrah’s Nashville-based indie publisher Murrah
Music has become one of the country scene’s most important publishers — what
Glenn Middleworth, Vice President of Creative for Famous Music-Nashville,
calls “perhaps the best independent publishing house in town.”

Adds Karen Conrad, longtime Nashville publisher and consultant to BMG
Songs Nashville: “Roger is one of those rare people who has great
musical talent and business organizational skills. His contribution to
the Nashville music industry as a songwriter and a mentor to other writers
has been tremendous.”

“Roger has been a mentor and friend and taught me the difference
between a good song and a great song,” says writer/producer
Keith Stegall, now the Chief Creative Officer at Broken Bow Records. “Lyrically
speaking, he taught me that less is always more.”

Murrah’s own modest demeanor belies his considerable
achievements, which includes two consecutive terms as president of the
Nashville Songwriters Association International (NSAI), a term as chairman
of the Nashville Songwriters Foundation (NSF, where he currently serves
as chairman), a BMI Songwriter of the Year citation, and, for Al
Jarreau’s “We’re in This Love Together,” a BMI
Million-Air Award recognizing the hit’s one million-plus radio
performances.

Not bad for someone who just wanted to be a singer.

Born in Athens, Ala., Murrah taught himself how to play music on a piano
his father had traded a pick-up truck for. “I think he felt it
was good to have around us — he traded trucks, cattle, everything,
but that was definitely his most unusual trade,” he recalls with
a laugh. “I learned just enough to write, and since I’d learned
by ear I always kept it simple, didn’t ever really get too complicated.”

While serving in the Army in 1968, Murrah signed on as
a staff writer with Muscle Shoals music publisher/producer Rick Hall.
Following his military service, he and some partners opened a recording
studio in Huntsville, Ala., ultimately forming a relationship with industry
vet Bobby Bare; by 1972 Murrah had relocated to Nashville to sign with
Bare’s Return Music, and a year later had married the former Kitty
Goodman and notched his first nationally charted song, “It’s
Raining In Seattle,” recorded by Wynn Stewart.

“I actually got into the business to be a singer,” Murrah
notes. “I kind of backed into songwriting, but that took off once
I was in Nashville. I was successful enough with it to not have to worry
about my singing career. In the end it worked out for the best, because
I wasn’t really cut out to be on the road all the time.”

Murrah’s ascent as a songwriter started gradually, but quickly
picked up speed. “At that stage in your career the least things
can be very exciting to you, giving you hope to tide you over for a couple
of years,” he says. “It was a long and drawn out process,
but it was all necessary to learn how to write. I was also pitching a
lot of songs, which I enjoyed.”

So much so, in fact, that by 1987 he was co-publishing his own material
with Tom Collins Music. “One day I stood on Tom’s front porch
and, both figuratively and literally, looked up and down Music Row and
nothing appealed to me that would work. So I decided to step out on a
limb and try it myself. It was,” he says, “the best move
I ever made in my career.”

Within two years of its 1990 inception, Murrah Music was named Billboard’s
Independent Publisher of the Year, due in no small part to Murrah’s
own songwriting for such acts as Mel Tillis, Conway Twitty and the Oak
Ridge Boys, as well as by such developing writers as Rachel Thibodeau,
Mike Mobley, Neal Coty and Jon Henderson.

Murrah’s interest in working with new talent — more than
a few Nashville figures describe him as a “mentor” — is
something that comes naturally. “I love helping to train new writers
and help them come along. Sharing their first success gives me an opportunity
to go through that again.”

Such an approach is what separates the independents from the majors,
he says. “Big corporations are not so interested in training writers;
they want and to some degree need to hit the ground earning. As a result,
it’s difficult to impossible for large corporations to maintain
a close personal relationship with writers, especially young writers.
It’s more about the bottom line and the money. They become bankers,
bankrolling writers.

“But a writer needs to feel there’s a contact there, there’s
warm bodies. Being a writer myself, I can help them grow quicker, by
working closely and helping to nurture them.”

Currently, Murrah Music represents 10 writers besides Murrah himself,
and administers about 10,000 copyrights. The company is always on the
lookout for catalog acquisitions, and represents songs by Mark Alan Springer,
Phillip White, Jimmy Melton and Pat Terry.

And as he continues to work tirelessly with the NSF, whose goal is to
build a Nashville Songwriters’ Hall of Fame (he hopes to make a “major
announcement” later this year), Murrah’s personality and
reputation continue to impress others in the community.

“Roger has always been one of my favorite writers and has written
some of my all-time favorite songs,” says Renee Bell, Senior VP,
A&R, RCA Label Group, who estimates she’s known Murrah for
nearly two decades. “He is an incredible mentor for writers, and
this is why he has had one of the most successful independent publishing
companies in town over the past 16 years.”

“I used to pop over to Tom Collins Music, which was right across
the street from where I worked in the mailroom at RCA Records, back in
the early ’80s,” says Famous’ Middleworth. “I
loved to hang out and listen to Roger's new songs and Tom's stories and
perspective about the publishing biz. I think that's when I decided I
wanted to get into publishing.”

“When a songwriter becomes a publisher, very often he doesn’t
stick with it and he goes back to being a songwriter,” Murrah reflects. “But
I always enjoyed exercising both sides of my brain, as it were: When
I’m working the business side I give the creative side a rest,
and when I work the creative side I give the business side a rest.”

BMI Opens Doors for Music Biz Majors

Seniors at Belmont University in Nashville are getting a real insiders look at Music Row with a new program offered this fall called "Catalog Cast." The brainchild of BMI's Shelby Kennedy, Director of Writer/Publisher Relations in Nashville, this innovative program has 15 students trying to convince label talent scouts, producers and artist managers to turn the song demos they selected into hits.

BMI's Shelby Kennedy (center) with students from Belmont's "Catalog Cast" program.

The apprentice song-pluggers, who meet weekly at the BMI office, winnowed 450 uncut songs down to just 40 and are shopping them around. One of their picks, "A Boy Like That," has even been put on "hold" for Tia Sillers by a prominent Nashville producer. Getting a hold, or a request not to shop a song around anymore, is often the first step to getting it cut.

But Kennedy says that even if none of the songs ever get cut, the experience is still worthwhile. "There's a lot to be said just for figuring out where all the different offices are on Music Row," says the industry veteran who also created the Vince Gill Celebrity Basketball Game and Concert, which raises scholarship funds for Belmont students.

The Catalog Cast curriculum features guest lectures by a broad cross-section of people representing key aspects of the industry, including Broken Bow VP Larry Shell, producer Mark Bright, songwriter Phillip White and Warner artist Ray Scott, among others.

And the students aren't the only ones with something to gain. The 35 publishing companies that offered uncut songs for the program, as well as the roster of all-BMI writers, are getting their demos distributed to potential suitors essentially for free. The students themselves have served as a kind of focus group, giving a read on where country music tastes are headed among younger audiences. The program also helps identify potential job candidates who are about to graduate from Belmont's Music Business School.

"One of the things that's very cool about this industry is that we all get to help shape the environment we'll be working in when this next generation comes along," Kennedy adds.
