Semi Precious Weapons

<dc:subject>Semi Precious Weapons, Bowie, David, Rock, Hitmaker</dc:subject>

Fans of glam-era David Bowie and Roxy Music, listen up: There’s a new gang in town. Semi Precious Weapons, led by six-foot tall Justin “Precious” Tranter (“six foot, six inches with stilettos,” says his bio), is about to rock your — and everybody else’s — world.

“Semi Precious Weapons is about everyone,” Tranter says. “If you love great rock & roll, if you love glamour, if you love a crazy live show or if you just love a good party, you are welcome and we love you.”

The unexpected amorous passion can in part be explained by the fact that We Love You is the name of the band’s forthcoming debut album on Razor & Tie, produced by Tony Visconti, who not so coincidentally was behind the board for such glam classics as Bowie’s Diamond Dogs and T.Rex’s Electric Warrior.

“I’ve been waiting for this band for 20 years!” Visconti enthuses. “Semi Precious Weapons are just incredible. The songs are powerful, glamorous and, frankly, dirty.”

The New York City foursome — which also includes guitarist Aaron Lee Tasjan, bassist Cole Whittle and drummer Dan Crean — has already made its share of headlines: Named “best band in New York” in a Village Voice readers poll last year, SPW has been called “the most important band in America” by London’s Guardian newspaper and “unashamedly crass and deliciously animated” by British Vogue.

Most of the focus has predictably gone to the singular figure of Tranter, who sells lyrics like “It’s not my fault I look better in her party dress” with a vigorous camp swagger. But his growing influence isn’t limited to rock clubs: Tranter also oversees the rock-inspired jewelry line Fetty, available at Barneys among others, and recently designed a limited edition SPW sneaker for DKNY.

It’s the music, though, that clearly inspires him the most.

“I either think of a great line or image that I want to use and build the song from there or something is going on emotionally in my life that I want to vent about,” he explains about his songwriting process. “Either way, I always try to write as honest as I possibly can … even if I lose a friend or six.”

Lady Gaga

<dc:subject>Lewis, Jerry Lee, Lady Gaga, Bowie, David, Rock</dc:subject>

Who’s that lady? She's half a rock star, half a rock star’s girlfriend. She's 20. She's a songwriter. She is a singer. She's a pianist. And she's crazy. A RETRO, DANCE, FREAK. She has ears made of classic-rock, a voice of the 60s, the moves of a Brit-Disco queen, and a heart made of doo-wop and strawberry milkshakes. If GaGa had it her way, retro would be a noun, and pop just a cute name for soda--not a dirty word. This lady is a tiny person with a big voice and a lot of love to spread. During one of many wild performances in 2006, dancing at the piano in her trade-mark spanky pants and black eyeliner--the hypothetical lovechild of David Bowie and Jerry Lee Lewis--LADY GAGA, was discovered. Soon after, GaGa signed with multi-platinum producer, Rob Fusari. Her debut album is a hip-hop infused pop-lovers dream. The album combines her love of Beatles' melodies with retro dance beats, plastic synth sounds, and a corky rock piano style that solidifies her as a true drama-QUEEN. Check out Lady GaGa along with her DJ and Go Go dancer Lady Starlight, in downtown NYC, for the ultimate POP BURLESQUE ROCKSHOW. (Can you think of anything better than two hot groupie chicks singing retro pop in their panties? We can't) Lady GaGa & Lady Starlight: Changing the world one sequin at a time.
David Bowie Continues Pushing the Envelope

<dc:subject>Artists, Bowie, David, Foo Fighters, Reed, Lou, Smashing Pumpkins, The, Sonic Youth, Musical Styles, Dance, Pop, Rock, Musicworld, Feature</dc:subject>

There’s a delightful irony in the fact that David Bowie’s most recent album is called Reality . After all, he’s the artist who came to fame in the early 1970s as the master of many musical guises such as Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane and The Thin White Duke. Of course, from the hindsight of a quarter-century later, we all know that whatever form the artist or his music takes, he remains David Bowie — dynamic, challenging, fascinating, imaginative and always pushing the envelope of his own artistry and the state of popular music in general.

And the reality of David Bowie is that he is one of the major pop music artists — with a capital “A” — of our time. Voted “the most influential artist of all time” by England’s New Musical Express , he has sold millions of records, appeared as an actor on the screen and Stage, and produced such other notable artists as Lou Reed, Mott The Hoople and Iggy Pop, to name some but hardly all of his varied accomplishments. As a measure of his impact on contemporary music, he was joined at Madison Square Garden in 1997 for a 50th birthday celebration by such other artists as Reed, Sonic Youth, Robert Smith of the Cure, Billy Corgan of The Smashing Pumpkins, Foo Fighters and Frank Black of the Pixies. And then, of course, there are his songs: landmark numbers such as “Changes,” “Fame,” “Young Americans,” “Rebel Rebel,” “Let’s Dance,” “Heroes,” “Golden Years,” and more.

Born David Jones in the Brixton section of London, he picked up the saxophone as a teen due to his interest in jazz and then played with a succession of rock and pop bands before emerging in his own right as David Bowie in 1969 with the U.K hit. “Space Oddity.” On albums like The Man Who Sold The World , Hunky Dory , TheRise And Fall of Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders From Mars , Aladdin Sane , Pin-Ups and Diamond Dogs , Bowie took the nascent glam and metal movements to their wildest extremes, matched by some of rock’s most theatrical and incendiary stage shows. With 1975’s Young Americans , he took a left turn into American soul music, and scored his first #1 U.S. single with the title song. Bowie again changed tack with the modernist sound of Low and Heroes , and then conquered dance music on Let’s Dance in 1983.

Since then, Bowie has continued to stay at the cutting edge with a variety of albums, bands and tours, reigning as an elder statesman of modern rock and becoming one of the first major musical artists to pioneer an internet presence. For 2003’s Reality , his 26 th album, “I said to myself that I would just do a collection of songs that I was writing at the time,” says Bowie “A collection of songs with no through line, no undercurrent of any kind of narrative, no concept of tying it all together.” Nonetheless, it was an album that still reflected his continuing diversity and innovation.

Married to supermodel Iman, Bowie was in the midst of a 2004 world tour when, first, a pinched nerve and then, later, emergency heart surgery, caused him to cancel remaining dates. Now recovering, David Bowie will no doubt return to the public eye soon to continue to create more of the visionary artistry that has made him a man who has changed the musical world.

Cat Stevens: A Legacy of Lasting Favorites

<dc:subject>Artists, Bowie, David, Crow, Sheryl, Gil, Gilberto, John, Elton, LaBelle, Patti, Mavericks, The, McLachlan, Sarah, Offspring, The, Parton, Dolly, Stevens, Cat, Train, Musical Styles, Folk, Pop, Singer-Songwriter, Musicworld, Feature, Type, International</dc:subject>

The artist best known as Cat Stevens is a man of many names — born Steven Georgiou and now named Yusuf Islam — as well as a number of musical incarnations and at least a small measure of controversy. But his songs transcend all of that, as lasting favorites that continue to resonate in his own recordings and numerous cover versions.

His songwriting legacy includes such classics as "Peace Train" (recorded by 10,000 Maniacs, Dolly Parton and Don Williams), "Wild World" (cut by Jimmy Cliff and Maxi Priest) and "The First Cut is the Deepest" (covered by Rod Stewart and, recently, Sheryl Crow). The list of others who have performed songs written by Stevens is as diverse as the modern music scene itself: Pearl Jam, Wayne Newton, Sarah McLachlan, Johnny Cash, Patti LaBelle, The Mavericks, Gilberto Gil, New Order, Floyd Cramer, Yo La Tengo and Elton John, to name but a few. And his catalog includes such other classics as "Moon Shadow," "Where Do The Children Play," "Morning Has Broken" and "Sad Lisa."

It's all an amazing accomplishment for a singer, writer and guitarist who was The Offspring of a Greek father (who ran a London restaurant) and Swedish mother. Raised and educated in Sweden, where his studies included classical music, Stevens landed in England during his late teens. Songs from his debut album, Matthew and Son , made him a U.K. pop star while a hit version of "There Goes My Baby" by The Tremeloes began his decades-long string of high profile covers.

After a bout with tuberculosis in 1969, Stevens reemerged as a unique folk-rock troubadour whose gentle style nonetheless conveyed songs of stunning depth, intensity and resonance. Albums like Mona Bone Jakon , Tea for The Tillerman , Teaser and The Firecat and others made him a staple on American pop and album radio as well as an international star. A longtime spiritual bent led him to convert to Islam in 1979 and not long after change his name and leave the music business. A decade later he made headlines with a statement supporting Ayatollah Khomeini's fatwa (Islamic death sentence) against novelist Salman Rushdie that Stevens later claimed to have been misinterpreted. The controversial declaration caused many U.S. radio stations to pull the music of Cat Stevens from their playlists. But the lasting strength of his creations and heart found within them has overcome that situation.

Last year Stevens returned briefly to the pop music scene to re-record "Peace Train" for an album to benefit the children of Iraq that also included contributions from Paul McCartney, David Bowie, George Michael and other British pop stars. “'Peace Train' is a song I wrote, the message of which continues to breeze thunderously through the hearts of millions of human beings," says Stevens, "and there is a powerful need for people to feel that gust of hope rise up again."

BMI Helping Artists Recover Unclaimed Royalties

In a press conference held on May 4, New York State Attorney General Eliot Spitzer announced that a deal had been reached with top record companies to return nearly $50 million in unclaimed royalties to thousands of artists and performers. The settlement is the result of a two-year investigation by Spitzer's office that found many artists and writers were not being paid by these companies because contact had not been maintained. BMI has been working with the Attorney General's office to help locate BMI artist/songwriters who may be entitled to a portion of these royalties. At this point in time, the royalties being distributed pertain only to recording artists royalties.

Pictured in the Attorney General's office after the press conference are ASCAP's Jim Steinblatt, the Recording Academy's Daryl Friedman, the R&B Foundation's Judy Tint, Attorney General Eliot Spitzer, and BMI's Frances Preston and Fred Cannon. photo © 2004 BMI

"As a result of this agreement, new procedures will be adopted to ensure that the artists and their descendants will receive the compensation to which they are entitled," Spitzer said.
The participating companies include Sony Music Entertainment, Sony/ATV Music Publishing, Warner Music Group, UMG Recordings, Universal Music, EMI Music Publishing, EMI Music North America, BMG Songs, Careers-BMG Music Publishing, BMG Music and the Harry Fox Agency.

Click here for a list of contacts from participating companies

In addition, each company has agreed to have the heads of their royalty, accounting and legal departments meet regularly to review the status of royalty accounts and take steps to improve royalty payment procedures. They have also agreed to comply with New York State's Abandoned Property Law, which requires that if an artist or his or her family cannot be found, unclaimed royalties be "escheated" or turned over to the state. The state then holds these monies until a claim is made.
Since the investigation began two years ago, more than $25 million has already been returned to those who were owed funds. An additional $25 million is expected to be distributed as part of this settlement.
Some of BMI's biggest songwriter/artists are among those who are owed royalties, including David Bowie, Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson and Gloria Estefan.
Earlier this year, BMI made a similar move urging songwriters and composers to keep their addresses up-to-date to ensure that they receive royalty payments.
