Newman, whose scoring credits span cinema, has received Academy Award nominations for American Beauty, The Shawshank Redemption, Little Women and Unstrung Heroes, a Golden Globe nomination for American Beauty and a BAFTA and Grammy win for American Beauty. Newman was also presented with the prestigious Richard Kirk Award for outstanding career achievement at the 2000 BMI Film & Television Awards.

Versatile BMI songwriter and producer Ed Cash won big as well, adding yet another Producer of the Year honor to his credit, along with a nod to his role as writer on Song of the Year and Worship Song of the Year, "How Great is Our God."

BMI's Christian rock artists celebrated another strong showing this year. Rockers Casting Crowns nabbed Group of the Year honors and Pop/Contemporary Album of the Year for Lifesong, while punk rock troupe Relient K snagged Rock Album of the Year for Mmhmm. "The Slam" by tobyMac, featuring producer Christopher Stevens, was named Rock Recorded Song of the Year.

Wayne Haun	Blind Boys of Alabama

Matt Kearney and Robert Marvin's tune, "Trainwreck," was dubbed Rap/Hip Hop Recorded Song of the Year, while Rap/Hip Hop Album of the Year went to producer Aaron Sprinkle for Behind the Music. Kirk Franklin dominated the urban categories, taking home honors for Urban Recorded Song of the Year ("Looking for You") and Urban Album of the Year (Hero).

Switchfoot

Alison Krauss & Union Station were honored along with producer Ronald Block for "Living Prayer," which was named Bluegrass Recorded Song of the Year. Carrie Underwood added to her swelling list of accolades as "Jesus, Take the Wheel" was deemed Country Recorded Song of the Year. Rounding out the country and bluegrass categories, The Lewis Family's collaboration with producer Wayne Haun, One Rose, nabbed Bluegrass Album of the Year.

Sixteen-year-old BMI artist Corey Brooks' album About You earned the young performer his first GMA nomination for Country Album of the Year. Brooks made the trip to Nashville all the way from West Virginia to attend the ceremony. Although he went home without an award, he left with something that may very well mean much more. "This was my first GMA Awards show and it amazed me how God is using everyone's unique talent as tools to glorify Him," Brooks mused. "I was so honored to be nominated with such phenomenal artists in the rising genre of Christian Country Music."

Singer/songwriter/producer Aaron Sprinkle was showered with the most praise, earning eight nominations for his work with artists in a variety of categories, including pop/contemporary, rap/hip-hop and worship. Three of his nominations are for CD compilations that will compete for Special Event Album of the Year, including Happy Christmas Volume Four, Music Inspired by the Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and WoW Christmas Green.

Pop-punk outfit Relient K came in with six nods, earning two for "Be My Escape," two for their album Mmhmm, and two as contributing artists on a pair of Special Event Album nominees.

Earning five nominations apiece were Christian rock band Casting Crowns, who will vie for Group and Artist of the Year; alt-rock group Switchfoot, whose Nothing Is Sound is up for Rock/Contemporary Album of the Year; and 2005's Producer of the Year Ed Cash, who hopes for a repeat win in that category.

Southern gospel veterans the Crabb Family also took home five GMA nominations, with individual family members Gerald, Jason, Adam and Aaron each earning their own multiple nods.

Casting Crowns' lead singer Mark Hall picked up a total of four solo mentions, including two Song of the Year nominations for the hits "Lifesong" and "Voice of Truth." Pop/rock quartet Jars of Clay, producer Wayne Haun and Relient K frontman Matthew Theissen rounded out the quadruple nominees list.

BMI award-winning artist/songwriter Steven Curtis Chapman, who has collected 49 Dove Awards to date -- more than any other artist in gospel music history -- has a chance to pass the 50-trophy mark this year if any of his three nominations results in win.

Also earning triple nominations were 13-time GMA Award winner Lari Goss, gospel producer Sanchez Harley and church group Israel & New Breed; leader Israel Houghton is up for five of his own GMAs.

Songwriter of the Year contenders will be revealed, along with the winner, at the 37th Annual GMA Music Awards ceremony, to be hosted by 2006 Dove nominees Rebecca St. James and Kirk Franklin. The recorded show will be televised in national syndication from April 15 to May 21.

Pop-rockers Maroon5 took home the prestigious Best New Artist Grammy, a surprise to even the band's own members. When lead singer, Adam Levine, accepted the award, he commented: "Kanye West, I want to thank you so much for being unbelievable."

BMI artists once again dominated the Latin category, winning five of the six awards, including Best Latin Rock/Alternative Album (Street Signs) by multicultural, hip-hop outfit Ozomatli and Best Mexican/Mexican-American Album by Tejano-norte�o fusion band Intocable. Cuban bassist Israel "Cachao" L�pez's �Ahora S�! was named Best Traditional Tropical Latin Album and the Spanish Harlem Orchestra won for Best Salsa/Merengue Album. The Best Tejano Album win went to BMI composers David Lee Garza, Joel Guzman and Sunny Sauceda.

Ozomatli

BMI jazz artists also had a strong showing, winning Grammys in four out of six fields, with the Best Jazz Instrumental Album statuette going to McCoy Tyner, Gary Bartz, Terence Blanchard and Christian McBride for Illuminations. Herbie Hancock picked up his ninth career Grammy for Best Jazz Instrumental Solo, Charlie Haden's release Land of the Sun was named Best Latin Jazz Album and Bill Frisell's Unspeakable earned the Best Contemporary Jazz Album title.

Winning two Grammys each were classical composer John Adams and BMI Icon Loretta Lynn. This is legendary country singer's second Grammy; she won in 1971 for her collaboration with Conway Twitty. Her album, Van Lear Rose, earned her the Best Country Album trophy, which she accepted with the album's producer Jack White of the White Stripes. The pair also won Best Country Collaboration With Vocals for the track "Portland Oregon."

Newcomers Los Lonely Boys opened the Grammy show with their #1 breakthrough smash "Heaven," which earned the Tex-Mex brothers the trophy for Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. Hip-hop party band the Black Eyed Peas picked up a Grammy for "Let's Get It Started," named Best Rap Performance By A Duo Or Group, while crunk rapper Lil Jon received a Grammy nod for his collaboration on the Usher hit "Yeah!".

Other BMI winners included Basement Jaxx [PRS] (Best Electronic/Dance Album), Tim McGraw (Best Male Country Vocal Performance), The Blind Boys Of Alabama (Best Traditional Soul Gospel Album), Brave Combo (Best Polka Album), and BMI Icon Brian Wilson, who also earned his very first Grammy. The Beach Boys leader was also honored on February 11 as the Person of the Year at the annual MusiCares dinner, which cited him as "one of the most important songwriters and recording artists of our time."

“I got a bad, bad cold, but I’m alright,” he says with a laugh. “I know how to get around that. When you been blind as long as I have, you know how to get around anything you can come up with.”

The Blind Boys were formed in 1939 at the Alabama Institute for the Negro Blind, and now, 64 years later, Fountain and fellow founding members Jimmy Carter and George Scott are still going strong. “My philosophy always has been: Out of all the things you do, just remember to put the Lord first and you can go longer than you think you can go,” Fountain says.

In 2003, the Blind Boys released Go Tell It On The Mountain , a Christmas record with appearances from Mavis Staples, Aaron Neville, Solomon Burke and Tom Waits as well as a backing band that included John Medeski and Duke Robillard. It is a vibrant, thrilling release and, though it may feature appearances from George Clinton and Chrissie Hynde, it’s a gospel record through and through.

“What we really want to do is sing gospel,” Fountain explains. “We didn’t want to sing rock & roll. We had a chance to do all that Sam Cooke and Little Richard stuff, back in that day. But my thought was never on the rock & roll. I knew you could make more money, but I never wanted to be rich. I just wanted to get along and be happy and do what I was doing. I’m glad I did it that way. I wouldn’t do it no other way.”

That’s not to say that she isn’t bringing her impeccable lineage into her definitive, cohesive brand of songwriter’s pop, which carries tinges of Patty Griffin, Bob Dylan and Jonatha Brooke. She’s just not letting it overwhelm her. “People always say it must be really hard for you to be Hank’s daughter,” she laughs. “But really, my whole career and everything that’s happened for me has happened the same as if I was not who I am. People have been very cool about it that I’m trying to do my thing. It’s been good.”

Though she’s only been seriously pursuing songwriting for six years or so, she has already become a formidable artist, as her recent signing with Universal South attests. Williams has an album, co-produced by herself and Monroe Jones, due from the label in early fall, and in the meantime her notoriety continues to grow. A hushed, piano-tinged cover of her grandfather’s “How Can You Refuse Him Now” enjoys prominent placement on Songs Inspired By the Passion Of the Christ , which also features Dylan, Leonard Cohen and The Blind Boys of Alabama.

EMI CMG Chairman Billy Ray Hearn made the induction presentation to Preston, who was entered in the non-performer category. She is Past Chairwoman and President of the Gospel Music Association and a lifetime board member.

Al Green, senior pastor of the Full Gospel Tabernacle in Memphis, has won seven Grammys for his gospel albums. He began his career as a child as part of the Green Brothers, but later went out on his own to become one of the most important soul singers in history before becoming an ordained minister in 1976. He was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1995, and in 2002, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Recording Academy.

With 39 Dove Awards and five Grammy Awards to her credit, Sandi Patty is the most awarded female artist in the history of contemporary Christian music. Her 23 albums have sold more than 11 million units. Recipient of the Dove Award for Female Vocalist of the Year a record 11 times, her career has spanned more than two decades as she has taken her music to every corner of the world.

Vestal Goodman, known as the "Queen of Gospel Music," was a founding member of the Happy Goodman Family and the first artist to receive a Female Vocalist of the Year Dove Award in 1969. Goodman was notified of the GMA honor shortly before her death on December 27, 2003, at the age of 74. Her induction certificate was accepted by her son, Rick Goodman.

The GMA Gospel Music Hall of Fame was established in 1971 and has inducted 125 members since its inception, including Elvis Presley, Mahalia Jackson, Amy Grant, The Blind Boys of Alabama, Andrae Crouch, Tennessee Ernie Ford, The Oak Ridge Boys, Petra, Bill and Gloria Gaither, The Rambos, Thomas A. Dorsey, The Fairfield Four, Rev. Billy Graham and The Jordanaires.

Founded in 1964, the 4,500-member Gospel Music Association is dedicated to exposing, promoting and celebrating the gospel through music. The GMA represents all styles of gospel music including contemporary pop, rock, urban gospel, praise & worship, Southern gospel, country and children's gospel music. The GMA produces the Dove Awards, recognizing achievement in all genres of gospel music.

Evanescence

The White Stripes

Goth-rock band Evanescence picked up two awards, including the coveted Best New Artist Grammy as well as Best Hard Rock Performance for their breakthrough hit, "Bring Me To Life." A pair of posthumous awards went to the late Warren Zevon, whose children accepted statuettes for Best Rock Performance by Duo or Group (with Bruce Springsteen) and Best Contemporary Folk Album for his final recording, The Wind.

Rapper Eminem's Oscar-winning theme song "Lose Yourself" from the movie 8 Mile earned him the Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song titles; songwriter Jeff Bass also earned a Grammy as co-writer on the track.

Other winners included The White Stripes and jazz greats Wayne Shorter and Michael Brecker, who earned two nods each, as well as Café Tacuba, Christina Aguilera, Vince Gill, Sam Cook, Pink, Foo Fighters, and The Neptunes, who were crowned as Producers of the Year.

Rock band Evanescence also topped this year's list, picking up five nominations including Best New Artist and Best Rock Album for their multi-platinum breakthrough release, Fallen. Other five-time nominees were rapper Eminem and the late Warren Zevon. Also receiving multiple nods were Willie Nelson, Jack White of The White Stripes (three with his band and one individual), and classical composer Jose Serebrier with four each and Christina Aguilera with three, including Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for her smash hit, "Beautiful."
