The Country Music Association announced nominees for the 2008 installment of the CMA Awards Wednesday, September 10, and BMI songwriters and artists overwhelmingly populate the anticipated list, sweeping the Female Vocalist of the Year nominations and dominating numerous categories.

Effervescent duo Sugarland underscored their critically acclaimed year, counting an inaugural nod in the prestigious Entertainer of the Year club among their five nominations. The pair also snagged a Single of the Year nod for the emotive "Stay," co-produced by Kristian Bush and Byron Gallimore, along with Vocal Duo, Video and Musical Event of the Year nominations.

Carrie Underwood

Miranda Lambert

Carrie Underwood and Miranda Lambert garnered more industry recognition, mirroring their increasing popularity, while Taylor Swift joined Female Vocalist of the Year ranks for the first time. Reigning Female Vocalist of the Year Underwood gained another nod in that category and added an Album of the Year nomination for her sophomore release, Carnival Ride. Lambert joins Underwood in the Female Vocalist of the Year category, and her fierce composition "Gunpowder and Lead" is up for Single of the Year.

Ace guitarist and crooner Keith Urban also earned two nominations, remaining in the elite Entertainer and Male Vocalist of the Year ranks. Perennial favorites Brooks & Dunn retained their dominance, garnering nods in Album and Vocal Duo of the Year categories. Trio Lady Antebellum also added more prestige to their glowing breakout year, earning Vocal Group and New Artist of the Year nominations. Little Big Town's success with critics and the industry remains potent, as the quartet scored Vocal Group and Musical Event nods. The ethereal Alison Krauss also earned two nods: a Female Vocalist of the Year nomination and Musical Event of the Year tap for her work with legend Robert Plant.

BMI songwriters Monty Criswell, Rodney Clawson and Wade Kirby earned a Song of the Year nomination for the poignant "I Saw God Today," while BMI troubadour Lee Thomas Miller also boasts a nod in the prestigious category for his composition "You're Gonna Miss This."

The 42nd Annual CMA Awards will be broadcast live from the Sommet Center in Nashville, Wednesday, Nov.12 (8:00-11:00 PM/ET) on ABC.

BMI songwriters Monty Criswell and Wade Kirby celebrated their first no. 1 hit Wednesday, June 4 amidst friends and family in the organization’s Music Row lobby. The pair wrote George Strait’s “I Saw God Today” with friend and fellow BMI hit-maker Rodney Clawson, whose résumé includes no. 1 hits “Why” by Jason Aldean and “Lost in this Moment” by Big & Rich.

A crowd gathered in the BMI lobby to salute the writers of “I Saw God Today.”

The song marked King George’s record-breaking 56th chart-topper, making Strait the purveyor of more no. 1 singles than any other artist, regardless of genre, in history. Throughout the party, the songwriting trio constantly referred to the career and personal significance of penning a George Strait cut, let alone a no. 1 hit.

“I’m from Texas – and you have to understand, there’s nobody bigger than George Strait in Texas,” Rodney Clawson explained, smiling. “I never thought I’d have a George Strait cut. I grew up listening to him. This is just unreal.”

All of the co-writers are members of the BMI family. Pictured are (l to r): BMI’s Thomas Cain, co-writers Wade Kirby, Rodney Clawson and Monty Criswell, with BMI’s Jody Williams.

“We love the way George did the song,” added Wade Kirby, the quietest of the group. “We heard it for the first time together, looked at each other and said, ‘Man, that’s perfect.’”

“When I met George, I told him, ‘We don’t know how to thank you enough for this,’” Monty Criswell remembered. “George just smiled at me at said, ‘Well, write me another one like it.’”

BMI affiliates staked claim to the majority of the 2008 Academy of Country Music award nominations announced Tuesday, March 4 in Nashville. Reigning Top Female Vocalist Carrie Underwood helped announce the nominees live during CBS' The Early Show broadcast, which also featured live performances by BMI's Rodney Atkins and Miranda Lambert.

Rodney Atkins nailed the capstone on his red-letter year by receiving six nominations, including Top Male Vocalist, Album and Song of the Year. One of the feel-good stories of 2007, Atkins saw his ACM-nominated project If You're Going Through Hell achieve platinum status. After toiling in Nashville for 10 years in relatively ambiguity, the universally loved honky tonker's hard-earned recognition and fan-driven success slapped smiles on faces all over Music Row.

Miranda Lambert

Duos Big & Rich and Sugarland each scored four nods. Charismatic and eclectic, Big & Rich earned recognition in the prestigious Top Vocal Duo category and Single, Song and Video of the Year for the poignant ballad "Lost in this Moment." Big Kenny landed an additional two nominations for his producing credits. Sugarland underscored their staying power with a Top Vocal Duo nod as well; the pair's stirringly original tune "Stay" became one of the industry's buzz songs, earning nominations for Single Record, Song and Video of the Year. Member Kristian Bush also earned recognition for his production of the tune.

Miranda Lambert and Taylor Swift snagged three nods each. Critical darling Lambert's nominations for Top Female Vocalist, Album and Single Record of the Year reflect both the growth of her audience and creativity. Country's favorite wunderkind Taylor Swift's nominations reflect the strength of her year: nods in both Top Female Vocalist and Top New Female Vocalist reiterate the breakout strength of her year.

BMI affiliates swept both the Top Vocal Duo and Top New Male Vocalist categories. Duo nominees include Brooks & Dunn, Halfway to Hazard and Montgomery Gentry; Luke Bryan, Jack Ingram and Jake Owen will vie for the Top New Male Vocalist prize.

Additional BMI nominees include Keith Urban for Entertainer of the Year and Top Male Vocalist; Rascal Flatts, also for Entertainer of the Year plus Top Vocal Group; Martina McBride and Carrie Underwood for Top Female Vocalist; Diamond Rio, the Eagles and Little Big Town for Top Vocal Group; Sarah Buxton for Top New Female Vocalist; Lady Antebellum and The Wreckers for Top New Duo Vocal Group; Gary Allan and his latest no. 1 single "Watching Airplanes" for Single Record of the Year; producers Tony Brown, Mark Wright, Nathan Chapman, Scott Borchetta, John Hobbs, Justin Niebank and Byron Gallimore; songwriters Rodney Clawson and Keith Anderson for co-penning Big & Rich's "Lost in this Moment"; as well as Tim McGraw, Vince Gill and Sheryl Crow in the Vocal Event of the Year category.

Big Kenny said, "Thank you everyone. There are a lot of people here who have put good hard work, time, and energy into John Rich's and my career-the career of Big & Rich." John Rich added, "The first time Kenny and I really performed together in front of people was at MuzikMafia on Tuesday night at the Pub Of Love, and we want to thank the MuzikMafia for that. Thanks to radio for coming on board and giving us this number one, and thanks to Gator Michaels and all the regionals that have burnt the tires off their cars to take us to these stations. And honestly, thanks to Bill Bennett for letting us scream at him a few times and not throwing us out of here."

The music of BMI songwriter Damien Horne flows lavishly from an enormous
melting pot: traces of soul, pop, rock and rap weave in and out of the
young writer's deft compositions. The panoptic Muzik Mafia took notice,
and Damien became their Mista D.

Horne went on to open shows for Hank Williams, Jr. and Dwight Yoakam,
leaving a growing constituency of new fans in his wake, including Big
Kenny of Big & Rich fame, who loved what he heard and signed Damien to
his publishing company, Big Love Music.

Vicky McGehee

<dc:subject>Aldean, Jason, Big & Rich, Hill, Faith, McGehee, Vicky, McGraw, Tim, Country, Hitmaker</dc:subject>

Songwriter Vicky McGehee didn’t grow up dreaming of the spotlight. Or even backstage. In fact, the hit songwriter says she “never even thought of being a songwriter. This whole thing is kind of a fluke.”

This fluke implied fate. McGehee, an Oklahoma native, did not grow up in a musical family. “I grew up around country music, but I never thought of writing it,” she admits, and then adds, laughing, “To this day, my parents ask me, ‘Have you sold any songs this week?’ They think that’s how it works.”

Vicky had been working in Nashville’s entertainment law community for seven years when destiny knocked on her door. “I exchanged some contract work for a demo session,” she recalls. “It wasn’t anything serious, just some of my songs I’d messed around with, poetry just for me. To this day, I don’t know really how all of this has happened. It makes you wonder about how many people have a gift — a calling — that they’re not exploring.” McGehee reflects, “I started late; I’m not 20. I’m so grateful for everything I get.”

Vicky McGehee earns everything she gets. Songs like Gretchen Wilson’s “All Jacked Up,” Big & Rich’s “Holy Water” and Jason Aldean’s “Why” all feature McGehee’s candid touch. “Writing songs is personal. I keep about five writers really close to me,” she shares. “Reaching the top is not an easy climb. Now I just try to keep it between the lines.”

With a Grammy for Tim McGraw and Faith Hill’s “Like We Never Loved at All,” and 2005’s Music Row Songwriter of the Year title firmly under her belt, Vicky’s fluke is anything but. Yet, the songwriter remains modestly in awe of it all. “Success just means when you call, you don’t have to wait as long for a call back,” McGehee laughs.
