First Women’s Music Commission Awarded to Asha Srinivasan

<dc:subject>Srinivasan, Asha, Babbitt, Milton, Golijov, Osvaldo, India, Rouse, Christopher, Classical, Foundation, Women's Music Commission</dc:subject>

Ralph N. Jackson, President of the BMI Foundation, Inc., has announced that Asha

Srinivasan is the recipient of the first Women's Music Commission. The award, which is given in cooperation with the Orchestra of St. Luke's (OSL), includes a $5,000 commission to create a new chamber music work to be premiered at OSL's "Notable Women: A Celebration of Women Composers" in June 2007. Joan Tower, OSL Composer-in-Residence, and Elizabeth Ostrow, OSL Director of Artistic Planning, served as the artistic coordinators for the project.

According to Jackson, "Each of our judges and the final selection panel at the Orchestra of St. Luke's were tremendously impressed by the high level of the submissions we received." The judges felt that the quality was so high that several Honorable Mentions were essential and included composers Alexandra

du Bois, Hannah Lash and Wang Jie.

The competition, open to American women composers between the ages of 20 and 30, was judged under pseudonyms. During the judging process, the panelists were only aware of the age of the composer. Seventy-four entries were received from across the United States. The judges for the competition were Margaret Brouwer, Chester Biscardi and Joan La Barbara, with the final winner chosen by a panel comprised of the Orchestra of St. Luke's artistic personnel.

The Orchestra of St. Luke's is America's foremost chamber orchestra, performing approximately 100 orchestral, chamber music, and educational concerts a year, all showcasing the hallmark collaborative spirit that has garnered critical acclaim for vibrant music-making of the highest order. The OSL's contemporary music series, "Second Helpings," marks its fourteenth season in 2007 with a three-concert festival: "Notable Women: A Celebration of Women Composers," conceived by OSL Composer-in-Residence Joan Tower. Taking place over the first three weekends in June - on Saturdays at the Chelsea Art Museum and Sundays at Dia:Beacon - the festival's three programs feature works by women ranging from Amy Beach and Ruth Crawford Seeger to three young composers whose commissioned works will have their world premieres during the festival.

The BMI Foundation, Inc. is a not-for-profit corporation founded in 1985 to support the creation, performance, and study of music through awards, scholarships, commissions and grants. Tax-deductible donations to the Foundation come primarily from songwriters, composers and publishers, BMI employees and members of the public with a special interest in music. Because both the Foundation staff and the distinguished members of the Advisory Panel serve without compensation, over 95% of all donations and income are used for charitable grants.

The 23-year-old Venezuelan songwriter, who also won the prestigious honor in 2004, reclaimed the title and took home a $5,000 scholarship for his song "Para Mi Eres Todo," sharing the stage with some of the biggest names in Latin music. Established by the BMI Foundation and funded by the generosity of the peermusic publishing companies, the scholarship is awarded annually through a competition for original Latin songs and instrumental compositions.

Mark Batson

Producer/arranger/songwriter Mark Batson is nothing if not on a roll. Fresh off multiple Grammy nominations for his work on Anthony Hamilton’s Comin’ From Where I’m From album, producing and co-writing seven songs on Seal’s multi-platinum Seal IV and writing and producing a track on Beyoncé’s Dangerously in Love , Batson has quickly become one of the industry’s most sought-after talents.

Not surprisingly, music has been a constant in the multi-talent’s life. “My brother Scott and I took classical piano lessons from the time we were five years old,” he says, “and by the time we were 10-12, we were playing African, Latin, Cuban music, rap and hip-hop, and in the church on Sundays.”

Growing up in the Brooklyn projects, he says, it was necessary to counterbalance musical prowess with a convincing street image. “Gang members would come up to my floor to listen what we were doing, and it might be Beethoven. That’s when I realized that music’s really a universal language.”

Eventually, Scott decided to teach music, but Mark continued to hone his writing and producing skills. By studying with producers like hip-hop icons Marley Marl and Eric B., Batson developed a style he describes as “figuring out what artists do and bringing out the best of them. I don’t have a personal sound; other producers have a trademark sound, and they get paid a lot of money to bring that sound to a record, but I adapt to what the artists need.”

The big breakthrough came with India Arie’s Acoustic Soul album, which earned seven Grammy nominations on its way to double platinum. Soon after, artists like G-Unit (50 Cent’s backing crew, for whom Batson has done various mixtape compilations), Hamilton and Seal started calling: “I wrote 40 songs with Seal in a four month period, and he’s somebody who might write 10 songs every few years.”

Batson’s latest projects include work on Arie’s next album and a remix of Sting’s “Stolen Car” featuring Black Eyed Peas’ Will.I.Am. Working so constantly has become second nature for him, he says. “It’s really a matter of finding the lane where the artists drive … and sometimes I have to drive really fast.”

Sarah McLachlan: Creativity and Consistency

<dc:subject>Artists, India, McLachlan, Sarah, Musical Styles, Pop, Musicworld, Feature</dc:subject>

In a music world increasingly defined by what-have-you-done-for-me-latelys -- performers who hit with a single and then vanish, seemingly overnight -- the career of Sarah McLachlan stands out both for its creativity and its consistency. Few acts, after all, could risk a span of six years between studio albums and expect accolades upon their return … yet that’s just what McLachlan has accomplished with Afterglow (Arista), which quickly went platinum and has become a Top 20 mainstay in the album charts.

"A lot of these songs are about transition," she says, "the turning over of the rock, what's underneath, the murky, shadowy uncertainty where everything looks very different."

The intervening years were challenging, to say the least: McLachlan lost Her mother to cancer and, shortly thereafter, became a mother herself. " It's still all a blur to me -- it has less to do with the album tracks and more to do with my recent state of mind," she says. "I'm sure in five or six years there's going to be a record about all of this, but it's too close right now."

The changes in her life resulted in a new approach to songwriting: Forsaking her standard approach of writing on guitar, McLachlan composed all 10 of Afterglow ’s tracks on piano. "I used to go live in a cabin in the woods for eight months and write and write and write," she adds. "Now, spending time with [daughter] India means that I have two hours in the day where I'm not focused on her, yet even then my focus is continually being brought back to her. All of my old tricks didn't apply anymore in songwriting, and I really had to find that new way."

Created over a two-year period, the material on Afterglow retains McLachlan’s trademark lush production and emotive lyrics, adding a fresh, more mature introspection. From lead single, "Fallen," to the whispered tones of "Answer," McLachlan mines a rich vein of material that seems to hold endless opportunities for further exploration.

McLachlan’s philanthropy has also continued. Most famous for masterminding the Lilith Fair festivals, she also maintains the Sarah McLachlan Music Outreach Program, which provides free music education classes to inner-city youths affected by budget cuts. "It feels so good to be able to see their lives impacted, and I'm the first one at the recitals giving them a standing ovation," she enthuses. "There's hardly any joy comparable."

Looking forward to a summer tour, McLachlan says, "Taking a break and walking away was the best thing I could have done. It brought me to a much happier place, and I'm loving music again."
