Fred Cannon, Senior Vice President, Government Relations

Fred CannonAs Senior Vice President, Government Relations, Fred Cannon leads BMI’s efforts on Capitol Hill, closely monitoring legislation that affects songwriters and music publishers, and working with members of the Senate and House Committees that oversee intellectual property legislation. He is also directs several Washington lobbying firms BMI retains to work on behalf of songwriters.

Cannon joined BMI as Legislative Liaison in 1994. He was promoted to Vice President, Government Relations, in March 1996, and to Senior Vice President in 2002.  Cannon is involved in many state and music industry organizations and was on the Board of Directors of the Government Affairs Council through 2002.  Currently, he serves on the Communications Committee of the State Government Affairs Council.  He is also a member of the Board of Governors of the D.C. Chapter of the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences; he was elected First Vice President of the D.C. Chapter in 2004 and its President in 2006. 

Cannon studied Political Science at the University of Maryland’s Munich campus in Germany and received his Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from Whittier College in Whittier, California.
