BMI was excited to co-present “Take Two: Tyshawn Sorey Reimagines Max Roach’s Members, Don’t Git Weary” as part of 2024 NYC Winter Jazzfest at Public Records in Brooklyn on January 10. Co-presented with Pique-Nique and hosted by Gilles Peterson, the sold-out evening found renowned composer and multi-instrumentalist, Dr. Tyshawn Sorey, performing Roach’s classic album in its entirety as part of the “Take Two” deep listening series. Following an uninterrupted playback of the 1968 album, Sorey and his ensemble – which includes trumpeter Adam O’Farrill, saxophonist Mark Shim, pianist Sullivan Fortner, and bassist Matt Brewer, plus guest vocalist Fay Victor – reinterpreted the groundbreaking original record’s six celebrated songs as an homage to Roach on what would have been the iconic bebop pioneer’s 100th birthday. Dr. Sorey is a 2017 MacArthur Fellow known for his precision and inventiveness on the drum kit and an extraordinary ability to blend composition and improvisation. It was a rewarding evening of live music for all, and BMI was proud to be a part of it.
